CLEMSON — A promotional CD, highlighting The Buxton Company’s survey of Clemson, is being used as part of the city’s continuing economic development efforts.

Andy Blondeau, who assists the city in capital projects, retail development and community development, said he is distributing the CDs, attached to Michelin guides containing facts and figures pertaining to the city and Clemson University.

“There are three uses of the video — sending them out to retail prospects, for inquiries received and for commercial property developers and brokers in town,” Blondeau said.

So far, Blondeau said the feedback has been positive.

“We’ve been getting what I consider to be good feedback,” he said. “We’re going through due process making sure retailers match up (to what the city needs in prospective retailers).”

Earlier this year, Assistant City Administrator Chip Boyles said the city was preparing individual informational packets for 20 companies City Council members have selected to recruit for economic development. Boyles added that the targeted companies, ranging from Cinnabon to Target, involve “a real variety of retail and food service.”

Last year, the city hired The Buxton Company, a Fort Worth, Texas marketing firm, to assist in economic development efforts. The Buxton Company represents more than 1,200 clients and around 220 municipalities in determining how to best target retailers for their respective markets.

The $88,000 Buxton study, funded by the city through TIF money, consisted of three different marketing analyses for Clemson. In addition to retail, the study also included medical facilities and expanded convention and meeting space.

Blondeau said the packets are being mailed out to other companies in addition to the 20 selected by City Council.

“They are giving us a good look,” Blondeau said.

But Boyles added that the CDs and Michelin guides involve more than just retail recruitment.

“We also want to help grow what’s here — we’re not just in the business of bringing in new people,” Boyles said. “We want to get the Buxton Report in the hands of existing retailers and allow them to see what they may be missing out on as well as fielding calls from those not here yet.”

Boyles and Blondeau made their presentation before City Council Monday night. Though the issue was a discussion item, with no action required, council members gave their verbal support.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Mayor Pro Tem Butch Trent.
