Rumsey startles Sandifer with candidacy GOP, Dems will both have primaries
WALHALLA — Oconee Democrats elected party officers, selected delegates to the state convention and passed a series of resolutions calling for a more progressive approach to governance during their annual convention Saturday.
Ken Campbell was elected to a second term as party chairman and welcomed a slate of officers that includes some newcomers. Officers re-elected in their current positions included Ellis Hughes, secretary; Al Gaines, vice chairman; Suzanne Earle, second vice chair; and Mike Evatt, state executive committeeman. Linda Holt shuffled positions, leaving a two-year term as treasurer and joining Evatt as the party's female state executive committee member.
Newcomers to leadership include Ron Gutek, treasurer, and Amy Delgado, third vice Chairman. Delgado’s husband is currently serving in Iraq, prompting her to seek the Democratic Party as a place to gain a political voice, Campbell said.
"As in 2006, our party's volunteer base continues to expand," Campbell continued. "While I'm proud to accept a leadership role for another term, I consider the growth of our base and the addition of new faces to our leadership team to be the best indicators of the health of our party.”
