Clemson investigates illegal practice involving recent signee

CLEMSON — Clemson University’s recruitment of Bryan Narcisse might come with some consequence next fall.

According to a report Tuesday morning from an Augusta, Ga. television station, the former North Augusta standout worked out for a Clemson assistant coach in a prescheduled workout.

Clemson University spokesman Tim Bourret said Tuesday the school is aware of what happened and the university is investigating the situation.

WRDW-TV 12 reported that North Augusta High School principal Kyle Smith and athletic director Mike Snyder said the Clemson assistant coach, who has not officially been identified, asked for and was present a workout on April 11 at a local middle school gymnasium in which Narcisse and a group of his teammates and two others from a rival high school took part.

Narcisse signed to play basketball at Clemson on April 16.

But Clemson and Narcisse might get off easier than North Augusta High School and nine of the high school players who helped with Narcisse’s workout.

The Augusta Chronicle reported that11 players and an assistant coach from North Augusta High School participated in the workout causing nine of them to be suspended from competition next basketball season and the school to be banned from preseason and postseason play.

North Augusta will also be fined $500 for what the South Carolina High School League calls an illegal off-season workout because an assistant coach was present at the time of the workout.

The high school is appealing the ruling. Clemson will not release anything on the situation until its investigation is complete and it has reported its findings to the ACC and the NCAA.
