August 18, 2008 - 12:16 a.m. EST

CLEMSON --- Former Clemson All-ACC golfer Stephen Poole fired a final round 65 in the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. Poole finished with a 72-hole score of 271, nine-under par, good enough for a tie for 36th place. Poole's finish tied for the best in Clemson history for a former Tiger in his first PGA Tour event.

Poole, was a senior on Clemson's 2006 team that finished seventh in the nation. The native of Spartanburg, SC got into the Wyndham Championship by shooting a 65 in Monday qualifying. He was the number-one qualifier with that score.

Poole had rounds of 66-71-69-65 in registering his 271 score. His 271 score and nine-under par score in relation to par were both records for a former Clemson golfer in his first PGA Tour event. The previous low score was a 282 by Jonathan Byrd at the 2000 Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in Virginia. The previous best score versus par was a three-under par score by Richard Coughlan at Pebble Beach in 1998, an event that was shortened to 54 holes.

Poole's number-36 finish tied for the best by a Tiger in is first event. . Jonathan Byrd finished 36th in his first career event in 2000 and that is the best finish by a former Clemson golfer in his first PGA event. He was just the sixth former Tiger out of the 22 former Tigers who have played in a PGA Tour event, the first to do it since Lucas Glover in 2001 at the Texas Open.
