WALHALLA — A couple of familiar topics are expected to come up again when the Oconee County Council convenes at 7 p.m. tonight, although it remains to be seen whether council members themselves will join the discussion.

Polly Nicolay, a Constitution Party candidate for South Carolina Senate District 1, has asked for extended comment time to address the council on the subject of prayer at public meetings. Nicolay is running against incumbent State Sen. Thomas Alexander, R-Walhalla.

Resident Berry Nichols has also asked for a five-minute comment period on the issue of zoning.

Beyond what those two individuals may have to say, tonight’s agenda appears routine.

County Administrator Dale Surrett is expected to seek approval of accommodations tax (ATAX) allocations for the South Carolina Apple Festival in Westminster ($8,400) and an arts and quilts show planned by the Blue Ridge Arts Council ($788). Surrett will also discuss an in-car video camera system for the Sheriff’s Department.

The agenda includes the Golden Corner Commerce Park and Sewer And Water Group (SWAG) agreement under new business. Last Thursday, a representative from the firm engineering sewer treatment options for the park outlined costs. Council Chairman George Blanchard said he put the item on the agenda so that council members can pick an option if they are ready.

A renewed SWAG agreement, the document used to determine how sewer is provided to new development, is awaiting signatures by Westminster officials before being returned to the county for council action. Seneca and Walhalla have already inked the renewal, which is needed in order to proceed with transferring power from the Sewer Commission to a new water and sewer authority.
