Tigers past and present widespread among international competitions

July 8, 2008 - 12:15 a.m. EST

CLEMSON — Several members of the men’s track & field team, both past and present, have been and will be competing in international competitions this month. On Sunday, former Tiger sprinter Shawn Crawford added his name to Team USA’s roster after finishing runner-up in the 200m dash at the Olympic trials. Travis Padgett, a junior for Clemson this past season, will be joining him in Beijing, China as a part of the 4x100m relay team and as an alternate in the 100m dash.

Two athletes with ties to the men’s track & field team - Matt Bruce and Charles Allen - competed this past weekend at the Canadian Olympic trials.

Bruce, a rising sophomore with the men’s team, finished third place in the 5000m. He did not meet an Olympic qualifying standard, however, but did run a personal best time of 14:19.22. Allen, who competed at Clemson from 1997-2000, finished third in the finals of the 110m hurdles. He also did not meet the Olympic qualifying standards. Allen competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Cowin Mills, a two-time ACC champion and 2007 All-American who was a senior on this year’s team, helped the Trinidad & Tobago 4x400m relay team to a bronze medal finish at the CAC (Central American and Caribbean) Championships in Colombia on Sunday. Mills, who was born in Trinidad, ran second leg for his native country. The team put together a solid time of 3:04.12.

Matt Hughes, a freshman on the 2008 squad, will compete this week in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland. The native of Canada will represent his country in the 3000m steeplechase, an event in which he was an NCAA East Region qualifier this past season.
