Small fires dot Westminster

WESTMINSTER — A fire gutted half of a mobile home on Mobley Court in Westminster on Tuesday night, Fire Chief Chris Smith confirmed.

The structure was vacant and the blaze extinguished in roughly an hour and a half, Smith said.

“We got the call at about 11:47 p.m.,” Smith said. “It was a vacant mobile home. One end of it was fully involved.”

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, as has the identity of the owner of the structure. All units had cleared the scene by about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Smith said.

“The fire was in a bedroom,” Smith said. “We still have no idea what started it. The cause is still undetermined at this time. We are investigating it.”

The mobile home fire was not the only incendiary event in Westminster last night, as lightning from the strong thunderstorm that hit Oconee County yesterday set off two small fires. Two fires, one on Coffee Road and one on Highway 24, were suspected of having been started by lightning, Smith said. The multiple fires ensured a busy night for the Westminster Fire Department, as the tree fire on Highway 24 occurred roughly an hour before the mobile home fire was called in, Smith said.
