Westminster to honor native son
West-Oak product now plays in NFL

WESTMINSTER — Andy Lee, who made a name for himself with his big leg at West-Oak High School, the University of Pittsburg and ultimately, the National Football League as a punter with the San Francisco 49ers, will return to his hometown of Westminster tomorrow for a special event.

The city of Westminster, in conjunction with the Westminster Chamber of Commerce, will honor the hometown hero during “Andy Lee Day,” at the pavilion in downtown Westminster from noon-2 p.m., Chamber Director Sandra Powell confirmed Thursday. Lee will sign autographs and meet and greet those attending the event.

“We’re looking forward so much to having Andy back home,” Powell said. “We’re all very proud of him, and we’d love for people to come out and bring the children and see him.”

The event will also feature home-cooked food. Barbecue plates with meat, beans, slaw, bread and a drink will be served for $8 per person. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Tickets may be purchased at Dad’s and Lad’s, Insurance Works and the Bank of Westminster.

“It will be a great family day for the city of Westminster and surrounding communities,” Powell said.

Lee, who will turn 26 next month, had a breakout year in the NFL in 2007,

finishing first in the league with an NFL record of 42 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. He ranked second in the league with a 47.3 gross average and 41-yard net average. He has played in 64 games, totaling 389 punts (43.8 avg.) with 104 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

Graduating from West-Oak High , Andy was first-team All-State, two-time first-team All-Conference and Anderson Independent-Mail All-Area selection as a four-year starter. He lettered three times in baseball and twice in basketball. Andy was a standout pitcher, helping West-Oak to a district championship and baseball state playoffs with an 8-2 record as a senior.

“We’ve invited a lot of his former coaches to this,” Powell said. “It’s just incredible that we have two professional athletes from our little old town.”

Major League Baseball pitcher Jared Burton, 27, also attended West-Oak before going on to play for the Cincinnati Reds.

Lee continued his outstanding college play at Pittsburgh where he was the starting punter for three seasons after seizing the starting role late in his freshman season.
