CLEMSON — Incoming Clemson freshman golfer Jacob Burger of Orangeburg qualified for the 2008 United States Amateur by winning the sectional qualifier at the Colleton River Dye Course on Tuesday.

Burger is the fourth current Clemson golfer to make the field for the United States Amateur, which will be held August 18-24 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C. Kyle Stanley was exempt from qualifying by virtue of his selection to the 2007 Walker Cup team.

Phillip Mollica won his sectional qualifier in Pinehurst, N.C. and Sam Saunders won his qualifier in Haines City, Fla. on Tuesday. Saunders victory was by 14 strokes after he had rounds of 63-67. Burger had rounds of 69-67 for a 136 total for the 36 holes, six strokes ahead of the second place competitors, Patrick Reed of Martinez, Ga. and Mark Anderson of Beaufort. Burger's second round 67 established a course record.

Burger reached the final 32 of the North-South Amateur earlier this summer at the same Pinehurst No. 2 course.
