— Clemson defensive back DeAndre McDaniel has been released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond following his arrest Saturday by Central police for assaulting his girlfriend at University Village apartments.

McDaniel, a rising sophomore recently moved to linebacker, was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison on the misdemeanor charge.

According to a Central police incident report, McDaniel’s girlfriend told officers that she and McDaniel engaged in a heated argument in which she pushed his head while lying in bed. She said McDaniel then placed a comforter over her head and began choking her while jerking her head up and down. She said McDaniel then struck her with a closed fist to her face and head area.

The victim said McDaniel continued cursing at her, threatening to break her neck. Eventually, she said he shoved her down a flight of stairs and punched her in the chest as she fled from the apartment toward her car.

The incident report and warrant added that McDaniel’s girlfriend was treated at Oconee Memorial Hospital for serious bodily injury, including a cervical sprain, soft tissue contusion, facial and chest wall contusions.

McDaniel played in all 13 games last season, participating in 438 plays. He recorded 33 tackles, four tackles for loss, six passes broken up, three quarterback pressures and two interceptions.

Clemson head football coach Tommy Bowden issued the following statement regarding McDaniel:

“We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering the facts,” Bowden said.

Funny how people are convicting him before he's even charged. If you were there, please let me know.

She has a medical record for "serious bodily injury, including cervical sprain, soft tissue contusion, facial and chest wall contusions" at Oconnee Memorial Hospital. Who needed to be there? She clearly has the injuries!!! Since when is treating a woman like this okay? It wouldn't be okay if he were a regular guy-but since he's a pretty incredible football player, he gets all the defense in the world. Please, it is so wrong. If it happened to your girlfriend, daughter, sister, best friend-YOU'D BE INFURIATED. Stop defending him, she has a medical record! It's wrong and you know it!
