— SENECA — Dozens of suspected drug dealers are behind bars at Oconee County Detention Center in Walhalla after a drug sweep served warrants on offenders Friday.

Maj. John Covington of the Seneca Police Department said the sweep focused on suspected dealers in Seneca who had dealt to undercover narcotics officers during the last few months.

“This is a routine roundup of local drug dealers,” Covington said. “It started at 7 o’clock this morning. Officers from our narcotics division, aided by U.S. marshals, as well as personnel from Oconee County Sheriff’s office, Pickens, Anderson and Greenville city police formed a task force to do the sweep.”

The task force sought 39 individuals on more than 100 arrest warrants for a variety of drug charges in the city of Seneca, with many being taken in before noon Friday.

“We’re having a lot of success so far,” Covington said. “And we’ll continue to work all day and into the night if necessary to round up all the individuals.”

The suspects are being arrested for a wide array of drug charges, including selling prescription drugs, marijuana, crystal methamphetamine and cocaine.

“They’re for pretty much everything; it’s for all kinds of drugs,” Covington said. “It really runs the gamut.”
