Three things to know
The Clemson baseball team will present a donation to College of Charleston head coach John Pawlowski before tonight’s game to the Mary-Louise Pawlowski (MLP) Foundation. Mary-Louise, 13, is the daughter of John Pawlowski and was diagnosed with PNET (primitive neuroectodermal tumors), a rare malignancy seen in only two percent of children with cancer. The MLP Foundation was set up by her parents to support cancer research and help defray medical related expenses. John Pawlowski coached under Leggett at Clemson and is still a very good friend.
Clemson pitching has a 4.77 ERA and .288 opponents’ batting average. Matt Vaughn has a 3.37 ERA and nine saves in 26 relief appearances. He has also struck out 38 against 11 walks in 34.2 innings pitched.
Last week, Clemson catcher Doug Hogan led the Tigers by going 8-for-18 (.444) with a double, triple, and five RBIs. Left fielder Jeff Schaus was 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles and five RBIs, while freshman Kyle Parker added seven hits, a double, a home run, and five RBIs.
Bottom line: If the Tigers do not make the ACC Tournament, they currently sit in eighth place, then they need to close out the season with a win tonight and a weekend sweep at Central Florida later this week to have a shot at making the NCAA Field. Clemson currently has the nation’s toughest schedule and has an RPI of 36 heading into tonight’s game. A five-game winning streak to close the season doesn’t hurt its chances.
