I have heard lots about The Cliffs putting this Zest Quest program at Northside Elementary School. What is that program? I’ve heard this is a great program from many of the parents there; why isn’t it in all of the schools here?
Willie says:
ZestQuest is a program funded through The Cliffs and is being piloted at Northside Elementary for this year for possible expansion into other elementary schools in the future. The funding covers the salary of a wellness coach who assists the physical education department in encouraging proper nutrition and physical activity. I think it is time to put the whole Clemson Central Rec issue to bed. For example, I know they will have adult swim time during the summer, so they have found time when both adults and kids can go. I also think they know what has been done wrong in the past and are trying to fix it. I just hope enough people continue to go because, if they do, then they will probably have enough funds to fix some of these inadequacies and keep the place as a fine facility!

I think the person that didn’t recognize your sarcasm about the need for a new library probably would have gotten it if they had read a few more good books! Of course we need a new, better library! I know people like to claim our part of the country as vastly superior, but the rest of the country would read this and make jokes about us being illiterate and all of that. Libraries are vital to the growth and prosperity of any community. Any well-read person knows that, but there apparently won’t be as many well-read people in our area thanks to short-sighted people.

The library board could use support from all the Willie readers who have been voicing their support for a new library. There’s strength in numbers, and the county council needs to hear from many voices in favor of a new library before they’ll listen and take action.

I have read all the negative comments about Oconee Medical Center. I have a comment about the nursing assistants on the fourth floor. My wife was there for 10 days and they really took good care of her. They were very caring. To all the assistants I say a great big thank you.

I couldn’t agree with you more that coaches use various techniques to motivate their players, however some coaches use inappropriate ones. When will these egotistical coaches start thinking about the players instead of themselves? These coaches have been given a tremendous privilege to positively impact these children and watch their potential blossom. Instead one resorts to public humiliation with abusive verbal attacks accompanied with profanity and condescending body language. His behavior is inexcusable and a disgrace to the school.

I’d like to respond to a couple of items in the paper this morning. About the lady who was fussing about sorting her trash at the convenience center, they are not paid to sort our trash for us. We are supposed to do that and folks over at Salem have always been helpful to those that need it. And for the other item, county cars at games; one of the biggest deterrence to crimes is their presence. If I had kids, I would love to have the police around at the games.

I am in the cohort program with the School District of Oconee County. I am appalled of the cheating that is going on in these graduate classes. I am getting my grade with hard work and honesty. I see my peers cheat and give answers to each other. Most of them have previous old tests of the professor. I hate being in this program. I took pictures on my phone of teachers actually cheating. Who can I report this to? I would like to meet with you about this.

I’m not the one you need to meet with. According to school district officials, the Academic Integrity Policy calls for any student who has evidence to believe cheating occurred to contact the professor of the class. From there, the policy requires the professor to investigate and take steps related to the seriousness of any offense. You need to notify the professor so that any other student involved can be treated with fairness within the policy. This protocol keeps the communication/decision making about the occurrence where it should, with the professor who gave and graded the assessment while protecting the other students' rights for fairness.

Six years ago, the views of a motorist along the roads in Oconee County were misted mountains, flowering dogwoods and majestic skylines. What scenes do motorists see today? On the roadsides of Highway 123 between Clemson and the City of Seneca, along Old Clemson Highway and the side road of Hiwassee, which runs in front of Clemson University Experimental Forest, motorists see assortments of cans, bottles, fast food containers, pizza boxes, plastic bags, bagged garbage, cigarette butts, assorted materials fallen from pick up trucks and vehicles, dirty baby diapers, plastic cups and bottles, cardboard boxes, papers, etc. Only a few community-minded citizens are concerned about this blight in our county. Is our county government trying to enforce any littering laws in the area?

Why, yes they are. The county employs Litter Officer John McGuffin, and he is a very busy man trying to enforce litters laws in the county.

I guess you have read Clinton’s recent comment that the United States could
“obliterate” Iran if the Islamic state were to attack Israel with nuclear weapons. The facts are Israel has by far the largest and best-equipped army in the entire Middle East. Israel has about 200 atomic warheads and the rockets to deliver them. Iran may or may not be trying to manufacture nuclear arms. In brief, Iran is David, Israel is Goliath. Clinton’s comment shows that she thinks that we are totally ignorant. Unfortunately, she is right.

After talking to a few other local folks, it appears I’m not the only one left holding a gift certificate from the 113 Chophouse. Are these now simply worthless souvenirs for a dinner never enjoyed or can Willie help direct us to the former owner in hopes of some type of refund?

On County has big job ahead to sell rural fire plan
Here is what I think about the plan that has been put forth to the Fire Stations in Oconee County... I belive members of some of the Stations are saying that the money is not going out even between the Fire Station and it is not FAIR. Well I know that the station are working off the money that they already are getting and the big point that was made at the meeting on Friday was the money you get will all be NEW money they are not going to cut any money. So if you are already making it off what you have now I belive that 13,000 will be a big help or what ever you get will be a inprovement. If you only run 20 calls a year you should not need 200,000 to fund that. So is that FAIR? Well you can't make everyone happy just go ahead with it Oconee County I think it is a great idea.

On Tell Willie: 8/21/07
This is for the person who wrote in about the all the things that go on at Burnt Tanyard Bridge. Well I live off that road and drive by the bridge every day. There is alot of thing that go on down there that should not but to the comment that you made about calling County Law that is a joke. The other night I was going home and was behind a County Law Officer in a marked car and as we came around the cruve to the bridge there was people everywhere on both sides of the road. People holing one another, people with sticks, people with baseball bats, and just people yelling. The people were in the road and it was if nothing else and road hazard. Well the Officer that was in front of me did not take the time to stop, he just slowed down just enough to keep from hitting someone and nothing more. So to you comment on calling the County Law Enforcement I dont belive that will help anything because they are to scared to stop or just dont care.

While you are spending all you precious time trying to find out about me you need to check yourself. You had made more comments to me than anything. I love it, it sounds like I am winning. You said that when Rodney finds out who I am that you hope Seneca has a opening for me? Maybe you should be thinking about that yourself. You might need to watch who you are talking to about your little fun on here that might come back and bit you. 4GETABOUTIT you said that know one cares about what I say? I think that you are the only who cares and that is good enough for me. I love the fact that you cant wait each day to read what I have wrote. That makes me laugh till I hurt. Oh yeah watch you late night fire calls I would hate for something bad to happen to you speeding to the station or to a call. Just rember that speed kills. Most deaths in the fire service happen to and from calls.

I have not just because I claim to be on fire scenes that don’t make me a FF. How about my "more that first hand knowledge". You can get everything that goes on a fire scene right here in the DJM. You just need to admit it you love me. Over 30% of the article you read in Willie is me. I live everywhere and know it all. You can catch a lot from a scanner. The remark about going to calls is true most deaths happen to and from calls. See I can be nice I was looking out for 4GETABOUTIT do I not get a AT A BOY for that?
