A quarter-by-quarter look at Clemson’s 31-7 victory over Duke Saturday

First quarter

Clemson 7, Duke 0

Key moment: With the game still scoreless and under three minutes to play, Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper completes a screen pass on third-and-10 from the Duke 43 to Tyler Grisham who takes the ball up the field 19 yards to the Duke 24. The play sets up running back C.J. Spiller, who went 24 yards for a touchdown on the next play.

The man: Spiller carries the ball five times for 32 yards, including his 24-yard touchdown run in which he caused one player to miss and broke the tackle of a second on his way to the end zone.

Time of possession: Clemson 8:36, Duke 6:24

Second quarter

Clemson 17, Duke 0

Key moment: Clemson’s Willy Korn completes an 11-yard pass to Aaron Kelly on third-and-10 from the Duke 48. The plays leads to the Tigers second scoring drive which ends with a Mark Buchholz 39-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the half.

The man: Harper completes 9 of 10 passes for 74 yards in the second quarter, including a 15-yard pass to Kelly over the middle and an 8-yard pass to Spiller near the goal line, which sets up James Davis’ 1-yard scoring run with 47 seconds remaining.

Time of possession: Clemson 12:09, Duke 2:51

Third quarter

Clemson 31, Duke 0

Key moment: Spiller recorded his 12th career touchdown of 50 yards or more when he took a tunnel screen pass from Harper on the Tigers’ second play and raced 83 yards for a touchdown. The catch-and-run allowed him to break the school’s record for reception yards by a running back in a game, a record he tied against Boston College on Nov. 1.

The man: Harper finished his afternoon by completing 19-of-25 passes for 281 yards, including the 83-yard touchdown pass to Spiller. Harper’s 281 yards allowed him to go over 5,000 yards for his career.

Time of possession: Duke 8:03, Clemson 6:57

Final

Clemson 31, Duke 7

Key moment: Duke ruins the Tigers hopes for a shutout when backup quarterback Zack Asack completes a 28-yard touchdown pass to Eron Riley with 6:21 left in the game. Duke did not come close again to scoring.

The man: Kelly catches his 11th pass with 10:26 to play. The gain went for 11 yards, but it also allowed Kelly to become the ACC’s all-time reception leader. He now has 217 receptions in his career for 2,553 yards. He now needs 129 yards to break Terry Smith’s Clemson record for career receiving yards.
