SWU women top Koalas on pitch

October 3, 2008 - 12:15 a.m. EST

CENTRAL — The Lady Warriors got back on track as they defeated Columbia College 3-1 for their third win in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

SWU outshot Columbia 19-4, but the Lady Warriors only got nine of their shots on goal while the Fighting Koalas got three shots on goal. SWU goalkeeper Sierra Threatt stopped two shots while Columbia goalkeeper Tiffani Folles made six saves.

After being shutout in their previous two games, SWU (6-2, 3-0) got on the board in the first half when Katla Gudjonsdottir scored off a crossing pass from Katie Sullivan. Four minutes later, the Lady Warriors struck again when Katie Sullivan received a pass off the head of Meghan Bullock and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. SWU had a great chance to add to their lead with 19:00 remaining in the first half, but Rosy Escobar’s shot just missed going in the goal and the Warriors had to settle for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Neither team was able to generate many scoring opportunities in the second half until the Fighting Koalas’ Cordy Francis raced through the Lady Warriors defense and was able to get a shot past Threatt. With their margin down to one goal, SWU needed an insurance goal and they got it out of Caitlin Blake who had just checked into the game. Escobar sent a terrific pass to Blake in some open space and she drilled a shot past Folles to seal the victory for the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Warriors will enjoy some time off now before they travel to Brewton Parker College on Saturday, Oct. 18.
