CENTRAL — Chris Newton, a junior from Merrit, British Columbia, has been named the Beef O' Brady's Student-Athlete of the Week at Southern Wesleyan University.
At last week's Jack Shadwick Invitational, hosted by SWU, Newton's two day score of 147 placed him in a tie for second place in the individual competition, just two strokes behind the University of the Cumberlands' Joey Bussdieker, who won the individual competition. Newton's solid play during the two day tournament also helped SWU finish in third place, just three strokes behind winner Lindsey Wilson College.
Newton and his teammates are competing in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational, hosted by Berry College, on Monday and Tuesday. Then at the end of the week, the team will travel to Panama City, Fla. for the NCCAA National Championship Tournament. At last year's championships when the Warriors finished in a tie for fifth place, Newton was named an NCCAA All-American after he tied for sixth place with a two day score of 147.
