There was a weird feeling in Tigers' Orange-Purple game

CLEMSON — It was a weird feeling for Clemson men’s basketball coach Oliver Purnell Thursday when he looked out on to the court at Littlejohn Coliseum and did not see the familiar faces of Cliff Hammonds, James Mays and Sam Perry.

Thursday’s annual Orange and Purple basketball game, in which incidentally the Orange outscored the Purple 90-55, was the first time in five years the Clemson coach did not have any of the three on the floor in an official Clemson basketball event.

“You look out there and you don’t see a Hammonds, you don’t see a Mays and you don’t see a Perry, and you realize that you kind of miss those guys,” Purnell said. “But we will figure out something.”

What Purnell and his coaches have figured out through the first week of practice is the potential they have on the offensive end of the court. Behind Terrence Oglesby’s game-high 21 points, the Tigers had seven players score at least 11 points, while shooting better than 47 percent from the field.

“We have gotten better since we started, which was obviously important, but we still have a ways to go,” Purnell said. “Offensively we have a chance to be better than last year, but defensively we still have a ways to go.”

To get better, the Tigers will travel to Athens, Ga., next weekend and scrimmage the University of Georgia.

“That’s going to tell us a lot,” Purnell said. “We will get to scrimmage all day against a high quality SEC team.”

Clemson, which is coming off a 24-10 season, allowing the Tigers to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years, did have its moments defensively on Thursday. There were 32 turnovers overall, 14 coming on steals.

Freshman Andre Young had the most impressive night defensively with five steals, while senior guard K.C. Rivers, who played only for the Orange team, corralled seven defensive boards. He finished the game with nine rebounds overall to go with his 19 points.

“It’s not that we haven’t emphasized defense, we just need to see it move forward,” Purnell said.

Young was definitely the bright spot in the scrimmage. Besides his five steals, he also added seven points and six assists and had no turnovers. Fellow freshman Tanner Smith, however, struggled. He turned the ball over nine times in 31 minutes.

Catalin Baciu dropped in 11 points and had nine rebounds, while Bryan Narcisse added four points and two assists.

“(The freshmen) did some good things. They are trying and they are playing hard,” Purnell said. “We broke them down pretty good the first week of practice, and I’m sure they realize what the difference is now.

“Two or three of them came back and played pretty good today after having some down days in terms of what was going on. I thought (Baciu) livened it up out there. Andre was out the first three days of practice with a strained hamstring, so I think he played really well… Tanner is going to be a good player. You can tell that he sees things out there, but the game moves a little faster. That’s all.”

As for the older guys, Trevor Booker scored 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Jerai Grant dropped in 15 points. Demontez Stitt had 13 points to go along with eight assists.

“Overall, I was fairly pleased,” Purnell said.

The Tigers will host USC-Aiken on Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. before tipping the season off against Hofstra in the Charleston Classic on Nov. 14.
