Mike Thorne
Mike Thorne was recognized as Volunteer of the Year at a recent meeting of the Clemson Chapter of Duke Retirees.
Thorne has contributed several hundred hours volunteering in many different areas including nursing homes, doing odd jobs for the elderly, delivering meals to shut-ins, building churches and also volunteers 400-500 hours each year as a deputy law enforcement officer for the Department of Natural Resources in Oconee and Pickens counties.
Originally from Aiken County, Thorne graduated from Clemson University and joined Duke Power in 1970. He retired in 2003 after 33 years.
He says he volunteers his time because he enjoys it a lot and is blessed with good health. “It’s more important than trying to improve my handicap in golf,” said Thorne. He just enjoys helping other people.
He and his wife, Jo Ann, together volunteered approximately 1,500 hours last year alone.
In his “spare” time, he enjoys boating, kayaking, hunting and fishing.
