— Unfortunately for Jack Leggett and the Clemson baseball program, the Kansas City Royals made left-handed pitcher Chris Dwyer an offer he couldn’t refuse.

The Royals signed Dwyer on Monday, the deadline for teams to sign draft picks, to a deal that includes a $1.45 million bonus, the highest-ever amount for a fourth-round pick in draft history.

Leggett, who just finished his 16th season as Tigers head coach, said in June that he felt it would behoove Dwyer to return to school.

“I think he could really benefit by seeing it again and putting himself in a position where he’s having a really good day next year on the first day,” Leggett said at the time.

Dwyer, who was the first draft-eligible four-year college freshman since the draft’s inception in 1965, went 5-6 with a 4.92 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 86 innings in his only season with the Tigers.

“He's a guy that's a very talented, athletic left-handed pitcher who has a very good curveball and a fastball that we’ve seen up to 94,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore told MLB.com. “We're very excited about his potential as a Major League starting pitcher.”

Redshirt sophomore Graham Stoneburner, a 14th-round pick, said Saturday that he had agreed to terms with the New York Yankees, and last Friday signee Madison Younginer signed a deal with Boston, which selected him in the seventh round, that reportedly included a $1 million signing bonus.

In July, Clemson junior first baseman Ben Paulsen agreed to terms on a deal with the Colorado Rockies that reportedly included a signing bonus of $391,000.
