— Construction of a new Courtyard by Marriott in Tillman Village is continuing and officials say the 110-room hotel will officially open Oct. 8.

Jerry Kenny, vice-president of construction for Blanchard and Calhoun of Augusta, Ga., said workers are currently completing the lobby, restaurant and kitchen areas, installing furniture in the rooms and carpet in the hallways.

“It’s going perfect,” Kenny said. “It is supposed to be substantially complete by Labor Day. Corporate officials will then come and inspect the building as well as local inspectors. There will be other quality control issues and training. We’ll be trying to tie up all the loose ends by Oct. 8.”

Plans for Courtyard by Marriott, which is being built on the former Ole Norm’s property, call for a hotel that will celebrate Clemson University through its design and the materials used in the construction process. Officials said historical research of the university was conducted during the design process and that its military heritage, when the school was known as Clemson College, and Holmes Hall, the honors dormitory, is being incorporated.

The base of the building will consist of a split-faced block, followed by the use of synthetic stucco product in place of brick from the second floor to the roof. The hotel will also have the same type of shingle roof used on the Clemson campus, with a brown color for the canopy and porch areas along the front.

In addition to hotel rooms and meeting rooms, the Courtyard will feature a 750-square-foot restaurant with seating for 42 to 48 individuals. The six-story building will include a bar, two meeting rooms and a swimming pool.

Kenny said the hotel chain is excited about becoming part of the Clemson community.

“We just feel it’s a real nice, growing community and that there was a real need for an upscale hotel,” Kenny said.
