Tigers' recruiting picks up some steam

Clemson picked up a major verbal commitment from one of the nation’s top-rated wide receiver recruits on Saturday, when Bryce McNeal of Minneapolis, Minn. made his intentions known during the fourth quarter of the nationally televised U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

“I’m going to Clemson,” McNeal said as he donned an orange Clemson hat.

On Monday night, the Tigers picked up another big-time commitment as Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) defensive lineman Leon Mackey gave his pledge to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive line coach Chris Rumph during an in-home visit, according to Tigerillustrated.com.

McNeal, rated as a four-star recruit and the nation’s No. 14 wide receiver recruit by Rivals.com, had previously verbally committed to Michigan in the spring.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound wideout caught 41 passes for 344 in the seven games he played during his senior year at Breck High School. As a junior, he caught 31 balls for 705 yards.

He is the highest-rated wide receiver to cast his lot with the Tigers since Union High School star Roscoe Crosby did so in 2001 and chose Clemson over Oregon, Colorado and Minnesota.

Mackey is also rated as a four-star prospect and chose the Tigers over offers from Virginia Tech, Florida State and Georgia, among others.

A 6-foot-5, 260-pound trenchman that likely projects as a defensive tackle for Clemson, Mackey originally signed with the Hokies out of high school and was placed at Hargrave, but eventually de-committed and opened his recruiting back up prior to the season.

McNeal and Mackey are the second and third prospects, respectively, to give their pledge to the Tigers since Dabo Swinney was named head coach on Dec. 1, joining another four-star recruit – and Mackey’s teammate – Hargrave defensive back Jonathan Meeks.

The Clemson coaching staff has now secured verbal commitments from 11 prospects for the 2009 recruiting class. Seven of those players are rated as four-star recruits by Rivals.com – Mackey, McNeal, Meeks, Florence defensive end Malliciah Goodman, Greenville-Christ Church offensive tackle J.K. Jay, Sumter running back Rod McDowell and Spartanburg-Dorman offensive lineman Brandon Thomas. The remaining four verbal commits are all graded as three-star prospects – Lake View linebacker Quandon Christian, Warner Robins (Ga.) linebacker Eric Fields, Milledgeville (Ga.) linebacker Corico Hawkins and Connellys Springs (N.C.) athlete Tyler Shatley.
