West-Oak High School's Eric Rholetter, top, puts a hold on Seneca's Josiah Conrad during their match on Monday in Seneca.
SENECA — Even when he’s not at full strength, there usually isn’t anyone on the mat better than Eric Rholetter. The record book can certainly back him up on that.
The West-Oak High School senior, currently wrestling through a pair of injuries, has been virtually unstoppable throughout his career, and set the all-time state record for victories regardless of classification over the weekend at Greenville High School by breaking the previous mark of 217.
Rholetter is now adding to his record total, as he picked up career victory No. 221 on Monday night at Seneca, helping the Warriors to a 60-12 romp of the Bobcats in what was the final regular season match of the season for both squads.
It was a gutsy win for the three-time state champion, who escaped with a 4-2 victory over Seneca senior Josiah Conrad, who nearly came away with the win after some near-final second heroics.
Just the fact Rholetter was out there at all is a small miracle in itself, as he is just a few weeks removed from a separated shoulder, and a few days removed from a knee injury that led to a fluid buildup over the weekend.
But then again, West-Oak head coach Jeff Jordan wouldn’t really expect anything less from the Warriors’ lone senior than to be out there working through adversity.
“He’s done well, and there was a scare earlier in the season where we thought he may be done and might not be able to finish,” Jordan said. “But with hard work and just sucking it up and wrestling through pain, he’s had the chance to break the record.”
However, Rholetter said there was a time he doubted his return this season, as he feared he may not be able to wrestle again following his loss to Chapin’s Nate Polley, which happens to be his only loss of the season due to an injury default.
“When it happened, I thought it was broken, so I didn’t think I was going to come back,” Rholetter said. “ Now just knowing that was one of my dreams I always wanted to break, knowing I finally broke it, it was pretty amazing.”
Rholetter’s victory against Conrad came on the back end of Monday’s match and gave the Warriors a commanding 54-3 advantage in the final stages of the night.
West-Oak had opened the match with six straight victories by pin, with Randy Warren, Joseph Winkler, Andrew Addis, Philip Kern, Darion Wheeler and Chad Dimitroff all getting in on the action to open up a 36-0 lead.
The Warriors had three other wrestlers win by pin in Matthew Rigdon, Ryan Marcengill and Chris Welborn. Lee Rogers won his match by decision, as did Rholetter, to round out the West-Oak scoring.
Seneca (5-16, 2-3 Western AAA) got victories from Douglas Leslie and Lucas Glover, while Matthew Pierce picked up a win by forfeit.
The Bobcats are now looking to get back on track in time for the Western AAA region championship match at Woodmont on Feb. 7. The meet was moved back a week from the original date, which would have been on Saturday.
However, Seneca head coach Matt Saffer has no problem with the delay, saying it may be just the thing the Bobcats need to regroup from three straight losses.
“We’ve got about two weeks to prepare for it, so I feel confident,” Saffer said. “We’ll watch film from this, understand where we have to go from this and take some time off actually and heal.”
The Warriors are also looking to get healthy during the extra week, particularly Rholetter, as they’re hoping to give a little payback to Belton-Honea Path, which handed the Warriors their only region loss during the regular season.
And with the way West-Oak closed out the regular season on Monday, Jordan likes the way the Warriors are heading into the tournament.
“It gives us a chance to go to the playoffs and maybe make a run,” Jordan said. “We’re just looking forward to whatever opportunity we get.”
