A woman looking for some leisure time fun while tubing with her son and his girlfriend got a little more than she bargained for Wednesday when she became stranded on a rock in the middle of the Chattooga River.

Emergency Services Director Rodney Burdette said personnel from swift water rescue, Westminster Rescue, Salem Rescue, Mountain Rest Rescue and Oconee County Emergency Services helped get an unidentified female from the river after she somehow lost her water tube. The call came in at roughly 5:15 p.m.

“The 9-1-1 call initially went to Rabun County, Georgia,” Burdette said. “Then it was transferred to Oconee County. It took some time to determine her exact location. She had her cell phone on and called stranded on a rock in the middle of the river. The phone cut in and out and we lost reception.”

Authorities were able to contact the woman’s daughter, who had a better idea of the party’s entry point and location on the river, and ultimately track her down. Her son and son’s girlfriend continued downstream and exited the water on their own.

The incident occurred near Bull Sluice Run, in an area that does not lend itself well to tubing, dubbed “Eight Ball Rapids” by locals.

“She had a steep rock wall behind her and a long way to reach the bank of the river,” Burdette said. “The best thing to do in that situation is what she did.”

Crews cleared the scene by 8:15 p.m.
