WALHALLA A new Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post may be in the future of the Salem area. According to Oconee County Veterans Affairs Director Jerry Dyar, a movement is in place to charter the new service organization. Dyar said recently, “I have been contacted by Tom Hendricks, a Vietnam veteran, about the possibility of chartering a new VFW Post for the Salem area.
“Hendricks, a 24-year Air Force veteran is a fairly recent resident of the Salem community and has indicated to me that he would like to work on getting a new VFW Post in his community. He already has a potential high profile location/building in mind for the new post home,” Dyar said.
“I think we need this new service organization in our community. I would like to see a potential satellite location where local veterans from the Salem/Tamassee areas could visit and perhaps meet with our local Veterans Affairs Officer and get access to online veteran’s information through Mr. Dyar. We have been in contact with the State Commander of the South Carolina Department of the VFW and have been told that to charter a new post locally we will need the names of 35 veterans of foreign wars who will be willing to become charter members,” Hendricks said,
If you are interested in becoming a charter member in a new Salem VFW post, contact Tom Hendricks at (864) 944-1645 or the Oconee County Veterans Affairs Office at (864) 638-4231.
