CLEMSON — While Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said as much following the Tigers’ Spring Game last month, the battle between Willy Korn and Kyle Parker for the starting quarterback job will officially wage on into the summer, and presumably, the fall.
Swinney released his updated post-spring depth chart on Monday, and the two signal callers are listed as co-starters at quarterback. And as Swinney said upon the conclusion of spring ball, the battle may not be resolved for some time.
“If it’s a situation where they both are playing well or all three are playing well, we may let it settle itself on the field,” the Tigers head coach said. “I’m not opposed to that.”
There were few surprises throughout the post-spring depth chart with a couple of notable exceptions. One of those is at right tackle, where three players were listed as co-starters — incumbent starter Landon Walker, redshirt senior Cory Lambert and true freshman J.K. Jay — and another is at fullback, where redshirt senior Rendrick Taylor is listed as the first-teamer, though not officially a starter in the Tigers’ three-wide receiver scheme, ahead of incumbent Chad Diehl.
Chris Hairston, Thomas Austin, redshirt sophomore Mason Cloy and sophomore Antoine McClain are the starters, from left tackle to right guard, along the offensive front, and Michael Palmer is listed as the starting tight end.
Junior Xavier Dye (X), redshirt junior Terrance Ashe (Z) and Jacoby Ford (A) make up the starting wide receiver corps, and C.J. Spiller is obviously the starting running back, backed by sophomore Jamie Harper and redshirt freshman Andre Ellington, in that order.
On defense, Ricky Sapp and Kevin Alexander are listed as co-starters at the bandit end, with Da’Quan Bowers, Jarvis Jenkins and Brandon Thompson filling out the rest of the Tigers’ four-man front.
Junior Scotty Cooper joins returning starters Brandon Maye and Kavell Conner, from strong-side to weak, in the linebacking corps, and junior DeAndre McDaniel (strong) and redshirt senior Sadat Chambers (free) make up the safeties that will back returning starters Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancellor at cornerback.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Benton is listed as the starting placekicker and sophomore Dawson Zimmerman as the starting punter, both backed up by Richard Jackson.
The Tigers return 15 starters and 53 lettermen for the 2009 season, which opens on Sept. 5 as they host Middle Tennessee.
