Overnight storms cause flooding in northern Oconee County

A series of thunderstorms on Thursday night and early Friday morning made for hazardous driving conditions in Oconee County, Emergency Services Director Rodney Burdette said, especially in the Tamasee and Salem areas.

“We had heavy rain that caused some flooding,” he said. “We did have a private pond dam overflow.”

Several small secondary roads were rendered impassable due to flooding, some of which were so badly flooded that special rescue units were dispatched to get families at nearby homes out of their houses.

“Private roads in the Salem area were the only ones that were actually blocked by the flooding,” Burdette said.

Among those roads were Meadowood Drive and Mack Lane. Mack Reid Road and Megee Road in Salem all required work, and Oconee County Road Department officials confirmed Pine Mountain and Ridge Roads in Tamassee were also cleared by road workers on Friday morning.

There were no reports of injuries due to the storm, which delivered less than an inch of rain to the area according to the National Weather Service, although local fire departments spent much of the night responding to multiple false fire alarms triggered by lightning.
