CLEMSON — The Clemson rowing team made history this weekend.

For the first time as a team, the powerhouse Tigers made the NCAA Rowing Championships in Camden, N.J. on the Cooper River, faring well with all three of its crews advancing to the semifinals that will commence today.

With four graduates from Daniel High School adding to the team’s effort this year, junior Allison Colberg and sophomore Corey Geer are competing in New Jersey with hopes of returning to Clemson with a championship trophy.

Two more Daniel grads are also part of the team with junior Amanda Chivers on the varsity squad and freshman Maria Hill on the novice squad.

In addition to their NCAA showing, the Clemson rowers also won the ACC’s for the first time in history this year.

“It’s a huge accomplishment for all of the girls,” said Shelly Geer, mother of Corey Geer. “Many of the girls were walk-ons when they started and have really showed amazing talent. It’s fantastic to see our rowing team going so far this season.”

The Varsity 8+ team finished third on Friday, recording the fastest time in the last 500 meters.

The Virginia Cavaliers took first place, while the team from Princeton edged Clemson by just over a second.

The second race, rounded out by the Varsity 4+ team, nearly took first place, but was edged out again, this time by Ohio State.

If the Tigers place high enough today, they will be competing in the finals on Sunday.
