A single-car crash Friday afternoon in Pickens has claimed the lives of two Greenville residents.
Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Lillian C. Tate, 78, of Irene Circle, was pronounced dead at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens, while her daughter, Deborah E. Whitmire, 57, also of Irene Circle, was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Baptist in Easley.
Kelley said the crash occurred at 3:34 p.m. on Tabor Wood Road and that autopsies were scheduled to take place Saturday at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the accident occurred when Tate, who was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, drove off the left side of the road and struck an embankment. After the vehicle overturned several times, ejecting Whitmire, a passenger, Hiles said it eventually struck a tree.
Neither Tate nor Whitmire was wearing a seat belt, Hiles said.
The incident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
