CENTRAL — Katelyn Barnes, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., has been named the Beef O’Brady’s Student-Athlete of the Week at Southern Wesleyan University.
Barnes had 26 kills as Southern Wesleyan was down 0-2 to Brenau University and trailed 21-24 in the third set before coming back to win the final three sets 28-26, 25-17, 15-13. Barnes’ final kill of the evening, an attack that hit hard off the block and fell straight to the floor, came with the score tied 13-13 in the fifth set. Brenau followed up that kill with a hitting error and the comeback was complete. For the week, Barnes had 33 kills, nine digs, and two blocks.
Barnes’ 3.3 kills per set average leads the Warriors and is currently fourth in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Barnes is also 11th in the SSAC with her .222 hitting percentage.
Southern Wesleyan has five matches this week, starting Tuesday night at Brewton Parker College and ending this weekend with a tournament at Clearwater Christian College.
