By 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, officials will begin tallying the votes for council seats open in Salem, Central and Walhalla.

While the terms of office, including the mayor’s seat, round out at two years in Walhalla, eight possible candidates will vie for all six seats on the City Council.

Current Mayor Randy Chastain is running unopposed, while council member Janet Neville has opted to not to run for a second term.

New candidates Charles Buddy Land, Broadus Albertson and Tommy Crumpton will join current members, Kenny Johns, William Addis, Davy Lee, Duane Wilson and Ron Winchester in the race for a seat on the council.

Crumpton and Land have both served on the council in previous years, while Crumpton served from 1991 until 2003. Albertson also served as the chief of police in Walhalla.

In Salem, two members of council will be facing replacement. Myrtle Coward, who will be running for re-election, and Robert Grogan have served out their four-year terms while Mayor Diane Head, Ralph Whitmire and Kevin Talley won’t be running again until 2011.

Candidates running in Salem include Richie Caudill, Coward, Tony Grogan and Tony L. Moore.

For the Salem election, voters can cast their ballots at the city community center at 5 Park Avenue in Salem.

For the Walhalla election, voters need to go to the Walhalla Fire Station at 207 E. North Broad St. in Walhalla.

Incumbent Central Mayor Mac Martin, who is seeking his second term, will be opposed by Town Council member David Donald, who is completing his second term. Approximately seven individuals — incumbent Tracey Reynolds, Paige Bowers, Benjie Cumbie, Ken Dill, Joe N. Moss, John Wallace Palmer, Jr. and Jerry Turner — are seeking three council seats.

During recent candidate forums, support has been given for improving infrastructure, economic development and looking at future growth through planning.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the following precincts and polling places: Central I and Clemson I at the Central-Clemson Library at 105 Commons Way; and Central II and Pike, at Central Elementary School at 608 Johnson Road.

The hearing on any ballots challenged in the election will be held at 9 a.m. November 5 in the Pickens County Board Room inside the Pickens County Administration Building, located at 222 McDaniel Avenue in Pickens.
