CENTRAL — The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team had a tough challenge on Wednesday as they faced Southern Polytechnic State University who is ranked fourth in the latest NAIA poll. The Warriors played them tough for the full 90 minutes, but the Hornets came out on top 1-0.
Emeka Maduka scored what proved to be the only goal of the game with less than six minutes remaining in the first half. SPSU (12-0-1, 7-0) took 23 shots while limiting Southern Wesleyan (6-6-2, 2-3-1) to just eight shots. Warriors' goalkeeper Leonardo Berenguel kept busy as he stopped nine shots while his counterpart, Eric Ati, turned away all six of the shots on goal by the Warriors.
Southern Wesleyan returns to action on Friday as it hosts Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. It is an important night for several reasons. As it is the final regular season home game, Phillip Boyer, Zach Derr, Bryan Horton, and Luis Ramirez will be honored on "Senior Night". Additionally, the matchup between Emmanuel and Southern Wesleyan is part of the annual competition for the 'Lil Bronze Peach which encompasses six sports and academic excellence. Southern Wesleyan currently has a 4-0 lead in the standings after their 1-0 victory on September 8 in women's soccer, with four more points on the line Friday night.
