CENTRAL — Ashley Witherspoon, a freshman from Kings Mountain, N.C., has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week as well as the Beef O’Brady’s Student-Athlete of the Week at Southern Wesleyan University.

After being rained out on Thursday in Montgomery, Ala., Witherspoon and her teammates overcame two lightning delays and rain on Saturday to defeat Brewton Parker College 5-2. With the Lady Warriors trailing 1-0, Witherspoon was in the right place at the right time as a Southern Wesleyan shot ricochet off the crossbar and came right to Witherspoon who headed the ball into the back of the net.

The Lady Barons went back up by a goal on a penalty kick in the game’s 55th minute, but once again, Witherspoon came through with a game tying goal with just less than 20 minutes remaining in the game. After teammate Rosy Escobar scored consecutive goals, Witherspoon scored the fourth goal for the Lady Warriors in a 16 minute span and completed her first collegiate hat trick.

Southern Wesleyan (5-1, 3-1) will return to action at Childs Field this Saturday when they host Truett-McConnell College on Homecoming. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
