Kindergarteners and first-graders learn about fire safety

Students in kindergarten and first grade at Central Elementary School recently brushed up on their fire safety skills with the help of a few new friends. Firemen from the Central Fire Department came and shared some very important information, told students what to do if they were caught in a fire and gave tips on how to prevent fires. Read More |

Veterinary Technology Adoption Day is Nov. 19

Tri-County Technical College’s Veterinary Technology Department will hold a Pet Adoption Day from 2 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in Halbert Hall on its Pendleton campus.
The dogs are trained with basic commands on a gentle leader head collar and socialized with many people and animals. The cats are handled constantly for socialization and enjoy playtime together. All animals have been spayed or neutered, received current vaccinations, been wormed and checked for heartworms or feline leukemia. Read More |

Central Elementary honors its veterans

Central Elementary School was honored to have veterans from the Central community join attend its annual Veterans Day ceremony. Patriotic music filled the gym as fifth-graders sang “America the Beautiful,” “The Star Spangled Banner” and a military medley. Keowee Key, once a battleground

Lakes Keowee and Jocassee, along with their surrounding land, are some of the most pristine environmental attributes our Upstate has to offer.
But in 1761, the beautiful land was turned into a war scene, and thanks to local author and historian Jerry Alexander, the story comes to life with his most recent book.
Alexander, retired journalist and cartoonist, published “Blood Red Runs the Sacred Keowee,” a story about how the Cherokee Indians fought British settlers to save their homeland.

Grace Baptist breaks ground for new worship center

August 23, 2009 was an historic day for Grace Baptist Church, 15195 Wells Highway in Seneca. Under sunny skies, after the morning worship service, members broke ground for the church’s new worship center to accommodate their growing church family. The current sanctuary will seat approximately 190 people. Since Pastor Blake Pitts’ arrival in August 2008, attendance has more than doubled from an average of 100 people to 240-250 people in the Sunday morning service. Read More |

As an adolescent, I was the model for the Girl Next Door. I was a straight A student, well-liked and involved in lots of activities, both in school and in the community. I enjoyed being in school. As a senior, I was encouraged to participate in the Junior Miss Pageant, a scholarship competition with points given for academic strength, talent, interview areas and poise under fire, as it turned out.
