It’s that time again. Get out your Pilgrim suits, buckle shoes, funny looking hats and blunderbuss and go shoot a turkey. We celebrate Thanksgiving just as those staunch forefathers did on the fifth Thanksgiving in 1621.WHAT! The fifth Thanksgiving! Don’t you mean the first? Read More |

Brett McLaughlin: Putting a lock on my paranoia
Published Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009
One of my favorite movies is “Conspiracy Theory,” an action-packed drama featuring Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. She’s a pretty woman, and he’s just a darned good actor who plays this incredibly paranoid character named Jerry. He’s convinced that powerful people are out to get him, so much so that he has padlocks on his refrigerator and a secret escape hatch built into his apartment.
All of us have a little “Jerry” in us, and that’s probably not a bad thing. Read More |

Kathleen Parker: The storm before the calm
Published Friday, Nov. 20, 2009
Calm.
That's not a word one hears much these days, but calm is what some are urging in the wake of a new federal report on breast cancer screening.
Released Monday, the report has caused a stir with its recommendation that women in their 40s don't need annual mammograms and that self-exams no longer should be part of a doctor's instructions to female patients. Read More |

Dr. Debra King: Am I giving where it matters most?
Published Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009
This week I have many matters on my mind and many ideas running through my head that I am very grateful to share with readers. As Thanksgiving approaches, I am assessing my life to make sure I am being of value to those in my life. I know that it is more blessed to give than to receive and am wondering if I am giving where it matters most. With this in mind, I dedicate this column to the persons, my clients, who entrust their care to my team and me. I am content being of service even when I want to be served. Read More |

Patrick Moynihan: Poverty: the missionary view
Published Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009
I have never been poor. Even though my children may claim that I have cast our family into financial ruin by leaving lucrative employment in the United States to go on mission, we are not poor. Early on in our mission journey, the expense of our third child’s delivery was split over state welfare medical insurance and charity, but, even then, we were not really poor. We could have chosen to change our circumstances easily. So, I still cannot claim to know real poverty from personal experience. Read More |

Eugene Robinson: Our rogue Evita
Published Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009
No force on earth can stop Sarah Palin from becoming our very own "lite" version of Eva Peron — a glamorous and tragic legend, minus the tragedy. Eventually, some clever composer will write a blockbuster musical about her life and times. Stage directions will include: "SARAH fires gun. MOOSE dies."
It's futile to try to ignore Palin, however noble the effort may be. Read More |

Charles Krauthammer: Medicalizing mass murder
Published Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009
What a surprise — that someone who shouts "Allahu Akbar" (the "God is great" jihadist battle cry) as he is shooting up a room of American soldiers might have Islamist motives. It certainly was a surprise to the mainstream media, which spent the weekend after the Fort Hood massacre downplaying Nidal Hasan's religious beliefs. Read More |

Kathleen Parker:Minding our manners
Published Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009
Growing concern about incivility is one of America's more appealing trends. Increasingly, individuals and institutions are seeking ways to burnish the Golden Rule.
The concern isn't new — professor P.M. Forni started the Johns Hopkins Civility Project 12 years ago and published a book in 2002: "Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct."
Civility even has a Facebook page called "The Civility Initiative," where Forni and visitors exchange thoughts on the subject. Read More |

Carroll Gambrell: Up a tree without a paddle
Published Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009
Old Ray Sink is a patriot and a great American, but his buddies once left him up the creek without a paddle. In fact, he didn’t even have a canoe and he was stranded up a tree, besides. That was like 56 years ago. And, if you’re wondering how he got in that predicament and how he got out, perhaps the story can now be told. Read More |

Kathleen Parker: China’s choice
Published Friday, Nov. 13, 2009
One of the few incontrovertible assertions one can reasonably make is that no one supports forced abortion.
Yet, coerced abortions, as well as involuntary sterilizations, are
commonplace in China, Beijing's protestations notwithstanding. While the Chinese Communist Party insists that abortions are voluntary under the nation's one-child policy, electronic documentation recently smuggled out of the country tells a different story. Read More |

Alena Pelfry: Life at Collins Home
Published Friday, Nov. 13, 2009
I believe that Collins Home & Family Ministries is one of the greatest ministries around as God has allowed us the privilege of helping to heal hurting children for almost 30 years. Most of our children are from broken homes and have suffered some of the most horrid situations imaginable, while others come from a loving environment, with good parents who have made wrong decisions in life and now find themselves in great need. With the help of the Lord, Collins Home has seen great success in putting these lives back together. Read More |
