Oconee County Detention Center officials tell us that, for the most part, accused criminals are being offered bond in a timely enough fashion that the bonding process is a non-starter when it comes to considerations for renovating or expanding the jail. We accept that.

No clearer signal than the one delivered by the current recession should be required for people to get serious about the development of additional mass transportation. That’s why we are encouraged that local officials are going to look into extending Clemson Area Transit (CAT) service beyond Seneca to the Oconee County communities of Walhalla, Westminster, Salem and West Union. CAT has proven itself invaluable well beyond the university community it was initially designed to serve. Ridership across the system has skyrocketed by 574 percent since 2002.

County fails to make case for keeping cash

The Oconee County Council is beginning to do what should have been done a long time ago in terms of prioritizing its needs and getting serious about funding them. Too bad it appears the council is doing this not because things need to be done as much as to justify having a ton of tax dollars sitting around unused. It’s also unfortunate that they are getting this particular part of their act together at the very time that one in every seven capable workers is without a job and people are relying on the kindness of strangers to put food on their tables and, yes, to pay their tax bills.
