Tax comparison was faulty
Published Friday, Nov. 20, 2009
Editor:
The article on the front page of the Nov. 12 paper is a good example of misuse of statistical data, in this case to gain a headline, or a political posture.
The upscale housing developments that have been the trend in both Oconee as well as Pickens County in the recent past have made a general statistic such as this meaningless. Read More |

Going overboard?
Published Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009
Editor:
I have been out of town for several weeks, but since my return I have learned of the controversy over the county tax situation, and all of the publicity that has taken place. I respect the newspaper's right to take a position on this issue, however, I feel that maybe you have gone a little overboard. Read More |

So the House of Representatives has barely passed this massive, health care destroying bill and now attention on this debacle moves to the Senate. I hope your readers realize that Obama and Pelosi had to use bribery and coercion to get the last few votes needed for passage. Read More |

Council needs time to do its job
Published Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009
Editor:
I will start off by saying how much I enjoy the Journal. I cancelled my subscription to the Greenville News because your paper has so much more interesting local news. I appreciate very much what your paper is doing as far as publishing information regarding the tax situation in our county and indeed it does look as if we are being overtaxed. Read More |

Corbeil is doing a good job
Published Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009
Editor:
In my opinion, District 1 council member Paul Corbeil deserves praise rather than the criticism being heaped upon him by The Journal. He tells me his position on county finances, which I agree with, is that the public deserves an accurate accounting, but not at the significant taxpayer expense of an audit. I applaud his restraint, along with three of his fellow council members, in not spending taxpayer money unnecessarily. Read More |

Work is changing
Published Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009
Editor:
Since 1956, when, for the first time, white-collar and service workers outnumbered blue-collar workers in the US, the definition of work has undergone radical change. With the advent of computer technology, automation and demands for high volume production, direct labor needed to produce a product has disappeared. Read More |

DeMint urged to support trade bill
Published Friday, Nov. 13, 2009
Editor:
With all of the attention in Washington focused on the journey of health care legislation through Congress, it is easy for the rest of the important work of our legislators to go unnoticed. However, our Senator Demint has an opportunity to influence important legislation that would reform foreign aid and bring relief and opportunity to the poor and hungry people around the world. We need more news, less opinion

I have read newspapers for virtually my entire adult life — usually more than one on weekdays. But never before have I seen a local paper print full-page opinion pieces day after day on contentious issues that have irreparably divided the community. The Journal has done just that. Read More |

The Affordable Health Care for America Act was passed on Saturday, Nov. 7. Once again, it was a historical moment; something to celebrate. After nearly a century, this was the first time a chamber of Congress has ever passed comprehensive health insurance reform. Read More |

Deficit isn't issue when you're hungry

Editor,
I’ve been laid off from my manufacturing job for 17 months. In the months I’ve been laid off, I’ve heard many times the opposition to the health care reform bill. I’m not where I need to be in knowing all I should about it, but I do feel that it is needed for all people. Read More |

Did the insurance lobby win?
Published Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009
Editor:
Last Saturday, Nov. 7, a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives made history by passing H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. A vote for this bill was a vote to provide secure and stable coverage for Americans with insurance, expand coverage for those who do not have insurance, lower costs for families and businesses, and begin to reduce the deficit. Editor,
This Saturday, the House of Representatives finally passed, by a very slim margin, a comprehensive health care reform bill. My representative, Gresham Barrett, however, was not among those who voted "yes" and I would like to know why. Read More |
