Willie's first special, November 21

Willie,
The paper showed Gov. Sanford in Clemson with the Rotary Club and I’ve seen numerous times in the paper in the past where he’s been at Rotary’s in Greenville and Easley. I remember a while back where the Seneca Rotary Club said it was against their national rules to have a politician or that kind of thing at their meetings. Now I’m beginning to wonder if the Seneca group is just biased against Sanford and maybe some of their members were the same ones trying to get rid of him. Read More |

Willie,
It has come to our attention that the Ingles Corporation will not allow the Salvation Army to ring bells at any of their stores. This is really a sad state of affairs when one of our major stores will not support our charities. If anyone would like to write the corporate office, the address is: Mr. Robert Ingles, 2913 Highway 70 W., Black Mountain, NC 28711. Read More |

Willie,
I’ve recently switched from full- to part-time work and found myself more bored than I expected to be. Do you or any of your readers have suggestions for local clubs or volunteer opportunities? I’m open to all suggestions, but prefer volunteer work with kids, elderly or environmental causes. Read More |

Willie,
Oconee County is my home. We all work and live here, which means we all drive on the roads. Recently a beautiful young girl was killed at one of the most dangerous intersections in our county: SC Hwy. 11 and Critter Road. Something must be done! I am 19 years old and I have heard of too many people I know either getting in a wreck at this site or dying there. Read More |

Willie,
The reason so many doctors will not accept Medicaid patients is because the legislature reduced funding for Medicaid. This reduced payment to doctors to the point that they no longer cover expenses. Doctors cannot afford to see patients when they are paid less than their overhead. The problem is a direct result of the South Carolina Legislature. Read More |

Willie,
I would like to respond to the letter about the boys who work for the city of Walhalla taking a break at Bountyland Quick Stop in Walhalla. I’m one of the wives of the workers that work for the city. My husband and the city do work very hard to try to help keep the city clean. They have breaks just like everybody else does who has a job. They break at Bountyland at 9:30 a.m. I know this because I see them every day. The boys do a very good job of cleaning the city. I think that people should have better use of their time than watching everyone else. Read More |

Willie,
When does good old Oconee get in the business of underwriting bonds for the developers of Highpointe or any such interest? We have a ton of development that did not ask the taxpayers to underwrite it. The $6 million is backed by the taxpayers of Oconee; taxpayers read this. Did anyone notice that real estate is not selling? It’s great the land is supposedly worth more, but if there are no buyers, it is worth zip. Just ask the banks who are not lending. If this goes through, then I want roads and sewer on my land so that I can sell or not and let Oconee take the risk. Read More |

Willie,
I am a citizen of Westminster and I am concerned over my safety and the safety of others living on Greenfield Road. There is a posted speed limit sign of 25 mph on Greenfield Road. Many drivers are driving at speeds of over 45 mph on a street with many curves, small children and homes that are very close to the road shoulder. I live on this street and rarely see any law enforcement. This week, I watched two dogs get slammed into by speeding drivers. This happened less than 20 feet from my doorstep. The truck was flying down the road. I also observed two large trucks racing on both lanes of the road at excessive speeds. Several reports have been made to law enforcement regarding the speed limit. Is it going to take a tragic car accident or a pedestrian getting killed to get some police monitoring? What is the legal speed limit for Greenfield Road? Read More |

Willie,
On Oct. 22, Greg Oliver wrote an article entitled “Foothills Area Family Y Seeks Financial Support.” While the title of the article implies the need for financial support of their current activities at their current location, the article itself talks more about the future YMCA at Keowee River. The fact is the Foothills Area Family YMCA is in need of funds to sustain their current programs. The programs are numerous — soccer, flag football, basketball, summer camps, holiday camps and activities — and provide great benefit to the community. With the loss of income from parking for the Clemson football games, they are looking to all of us in the community to help them sustain these programs until the new YMCA becomes a reality. Their Web site, www.Y4all.org, has an option to make donations online. Their address is Foothills Area Family YMCA, 275 YMCA Circle, Seneca, SC 29678 to mail in checks. Let’s try and remember that the upcoming holidays are about the spirit of giving and even small donations can add up. I would like to ask all of you to consider the benefits of the YMCA and the many children whose lives are enriched by their programs. Read More |

Willie,
What gives? The County Council “takes months” to try and find an adequate replacement for the open administrator position. After hours and hours of reviewing 120+ applications, County Council finds “one shining candidate.” However, instead of offering Mr. Watson the job, Mr. Watson now has to wait while an outside agency conducts a new search with Mr. Watson already a finalist. What if this new agency wouldn’t have selected Mr. Watson, now what? Even though Mr. Watson grew up in the area, he must be wondering what gives. No wonder it takes so long for something to get done by the County
Council! By the way, I suggest McCall get a new picture taken. The one being used looks like he is mad at the world. Maybe he is? Read More |
