Willie,
When does good old Oconee get in the business of underwriting bonds for the developers of Highpointe or any such interest? We have a ton of development that did not ask the taxpayers to underwrite it. The $6 million is backed by the taxpayers of Oconee; taxpayers read this. Did anyone notice that real estate is not selling? It’s great the land is supposedly worth more, but if there are no buyers, it is worth zip. Just ask the banks who are not lending. If this goes through, then I want roads and sewer on my land so that I can sell or not and let Oconee take the risk. Read More |

Can you tell us the compensation of Ms. Brown at the county? What are her credentials? Has she previously worked in similar conditions with the accounting firm she chose for the county? Isn’t she appointed? She sure walks and talks like a politician. Read More |

Willie,
I am a citizen of Westminster and I am concerned over my safety and the safety of others living on Greenfield Road. There is a posted speed limit sign of 25 mph on Greenfield Road. Many drivers are driving at speeds of over 45 mph on a street with many curves, small children and homes that are very close to the road shoulder. I live on this street and rarely see any law enforcement. This week, I watched two dogs get slammed into by speeding drivers. This happened less than 20 feet from my doorstep. The truck was flying down the road. I also observed two large trucks racing on both lanes of the road at excessive speeds. Several reports have been made to law enforcement regarding the speed limit. Is it going to take a tragic car accident or a pedestrian getting killed to get some police monitoring? What is the legal speed limit for Greenfield Road? Read More |

Willie,
On Oct. 22, Greg Oliver wrote an article entitled “Foothills Area Family Y Seeks Financial Support.” While the title of the article implies the need for financial support of their current activities at their current location, the article itself talks more about the future YMCA at Keowee River. The fact is the Foothills Area Family YMCA is in need of funds to sustain their current programs. The programs are numerous — soccer, flag football, basketball, summer camps, holiday camps and activities — and provide great benefit to the community. With the loss of income from parking for the Clemson football games, they are looking to all of us in the community to help them sustain these programs until the new YMCA becomes a reality. Their Web site, www.Y4all.org, has an option to make donations online. Their address is Foothills Area Family YMCA, 275 YMCA Circle, Seneca, SC 29678 to mail in checks. Let’s try and remember that the upcoming holidays are about the spirit of giving and even small donations can add up. I would like to ask all of you to consider the benefits of the YMCA and the many children whose lives are enriched by their programs. Read More |

Willie,
What gives? The County Council “takes months” to try and find an adequate replacement for the open administrator position. After hours and hours of reviewing 120+ applications, County Council finds “one shining candidate.” However, instead of offering Mr. Watson the job, Mr. Watson now has to wait while an outside agency conducts a new search with Mr. Watson already a finalist. What if this new agency wouldn’t have selected Mr. Watson, now what? Even though Mr. Watson grew up in the area, he must be wondering what gives. No wonder it takes so long for something to get done by the County
Council! By the way, I suggest McCall get a new picture taken. The one being used looks like he is mad at the world. Maybe he is? Read More |

Willie,
Oconee County Councilmen and the City Council of Seneca should look at federal stimulus money to improve the roadway coming over the Seneca River into Oconee County up to the city limits of Seneca. Oconee County councilmen should request federal stimulus money to plant trees in the center and put sidewalks and bike paths leading back into Clemson and towards the Y Beach or as it is now called Clemson University Beach and Recreation. Beauty and an outdoor lifestyle are among the attractions of a highly educated work force — the kind that Oconee County should attempt to attract and retain. The city of Seneca would benefit by attracting thousands of people who are visiting Clemson to venture over the bridge towards Ram Cat Alley. Read More |

Willie,
I went to my 50th class reunion a few weeks ago. There were about 75 people there. I have never seen so many conceited people. There might have been 10 friendly people. The food cost $35 per person, and I am sure it came from a grocery store deli. To all who did not come you did not miss a thing. God bless y’all! Read More |

Willie,
I am reading a really excellent book about the battle of Vicksburg written by Winston Groom (who was also the author of “Forest Gump”) and came across the following quote. What struck me was its applicability to our current crop of cable TV and talk radio pundits (Olbermann, O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh in particular).
“The American press is a shame and a reproach to a civilized people. When a man is too lazy to work and too cowardly to steal, he turns Editor (or cable TV/talk radio personality) and manufactures public opinion.” General William Tecumseh Sherman. I would also offer an exception to the hard working staff of Tell Willie and The Journal. Read More |

OK, so we in Oconee have around $45 million dollars laying around in the bank. (I sure hope it’s drawing good interest). Come on councilmen, do something. It’s the same from the county level to D.C., do nothing folks in Washington and do nothing folks on County Council. Come on, do something! We have needs. Throw some money at them and get them done so we can see the result of all this money just lying around. Read More |

Willie,
I was glad to see that the justice system at least gave a minimal amount of punishment to the magistrate that got in trouble in Columbia. These magistrates and judges need to understand that they are not above the law. This brings me to my main comment. There is a municipal judge that through his gossip and statements caused a good friend of mine that is in law
enforcement to be reprimanded. He is always blowing things out of proportion and using his coined phrase “everybody is talking, everybody is talking” when in fact, he is the only one running off at the mouth. I think The Journal did an excellent job in covering the case with the magistrate that was arrested. There needs to be a lot of light shone on these people so to reveal what goes on inside and outside the courtroom with these so-called public servants. The conduct of the magistrate should not be tolerated nor should an individual be punished because of malicious gossip spread by one of these judges. Read More |

Willie,
In regards to an area of the Mill Hill in Seneca — the back side of the Mill Hill — F Street, is completely impassable. Responsible parties will not fix the ruts and people can’t get through there. If there was a fire or medical emergency, the county has not done one thing to fix this road. Complaints have been written and called in, and the councilman for that area will not fix it. Would you please find out who they need to get in touch with to get something done about this? Read More |

I find it disturbing that an administrator for our county has to be hired from Lexington at a rate of $70 an hour plus mileage for a round trip of about 300 miles. Is there no one in the whole of our county that can perform this job? Does the council even look from within? How about someone with experience with our county and its needs. A resident of and from this county would understand and care a whole lot more than a person that knows nothing about our area. Read More |

West-Oak High School’s Homecoming was one to be remembered for all the good things that happened! There were floats made by each class — very nice, students! The presentation of the competitors for homecoming queen and her court was well done! The JROTC Warrior Battalion Honor Guard was sharp and spot-on! The Sr. High Warrior band sounded good! The Homecoming Queen, Laicie Alexander, was beautiful and her Warrior Varsity football sponsor, Adam Cobb, was more than worthy of the honor as he is just a well-rounded student! The fireworks were also one of the many highlights of the night (these came after the announcement of the Homecoming Queen)! To top it off, the Warriors were able to celebrate with a well-deserved Homecoming win! Kudos to all the students, staff and faculty that made this wonderful evening possible! I am already looking forward to next year’s Homecoming! Go Warriors! Read More |

How come we never ever hear about the Seneca High JV Team? The JV team gave Seneca their first win of the season against Blue Ridge. Do these players not matter to the paper?
