Tell Willie, 10-31

Willie, Oconee County Councilmen and the City Council of Seneca should look at federal stimulus money to improve the roadway coming over the Seneca River into Oconee County up to the city limits of Seneca. Oconee County councilmen should request federal stimulus money to plant trees in the center and put sidewalks and bike paths leading back into Clemson and towards the Y Beach or as it is now called Clemson University Beach and Recreation. Beauty and an outdoor lifestyle are among the attractions of a highly educated work force — the kind that Oconee County should attempt to attract and retain. The city of Seneca would benefit by attracting thousands of people who are visiting Clemson to venture over the bridge towards Ram Cat Alley.

Willie, I went to my 50th class reunion a few weeks ago. There were about 75 people there. I have never seen so many conceited people. There might have been 10 friendly people. The food cost $35 per person, and I am sure it came from a grocery store deli. To all who did not come you did not miss a thing. God bless y’all!

Willie, There are two piles of brush on the sidewalk at the old Avondale Warehouse that have been there for over a month. Why does the street department not pick them up? It is beginning to get out in the road?

Willie, I am reading a really excellent book about the battle of Vicksburg written by Winston Groom (who was also the author of “Forest Gump”) and came across the following quote. What struck me was its applicability to our current crop of cable TV and talk radio pundits (Olbermann, O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh in particular). “The American press is a shame and a reproach to a civilized people. When a man is too lazy to work and too cowardly to steal, he turns Editor (or cable TV/talk radio personality) and manufactures public opinion.” General William Tecumseh Sherman. I would also offer an exception to the hard working staff of Tell Willie and The Journal.

Willie, OK, so we in Oconee have around $45 million dollars laying around in the bank. (I sure hope it’s drawing good interest). Come on councilmen, do something. It’s the same from the county level to D.C., do nothing folks in Washington and do nothing folks on County Council. Come on, do something! We have needs. Throw some money at them and get them done so we can see the result of all this money just lying around.

Willie, I was glad to see that the justice system at least gave a minimal amount of punishment to the magistrate that got in trouble in Columbia. These magistrates and judges need to understand that they are not above the law. This brings me to my main comment. There is a municipal judge that through his gossip and statements caused a good friend of mine that is in law enforcement to be reprimanded. He is always blowing things out of proportion and using his coined phrase “everybody is talking, everybody is talking” when in fact, he is the only one running off at the mouth. I think The Journal did an excellent job in covering the case with the magistrate that was arrested. There needs to be a lot of light shone on these people so to reveal what goes on inside and outside the courtroom with these so-called public servants. The conduct of the magistrate should not be tolerated nor should an individual be punished because of malicious gossip spread by one of these judges.

Willie, In regards to an area of the Mill Hill in Seneca — the back side of the Mill Hill — F Street, is completely impassable. Responsible parties will not fix the ruts and people can’t get through there. If there was a fire or medical emergency, the county has not done one thing to fix this road. Complaints have been written and called in, and the councilman for that area will not fix it. Would you please find out who they need to get in touch with to get something done about this?

Willie, I find it disturbing that an administrator for our county has to be hired from Lexington at a rate of $70 an hour plus mileage for a round trip of about 300 miles. Is there no one in the whole of our county that can perform this job? Does the council even look from within? How about someone with experience with our county and its needs. A resident of and from this county would understand and care a whole lot more than a person that knows nothing about our area.

Willie, West-Oak High School’s Homecoming was one to be remembered for all the good things that happened! There were floats made by each class — very nice, students! The presentation of the competitors for homecoming queen and her court was well done! The JROTC Warrior Battalion Honor Guard was sharp and spot-on! The Sr. High Warrior band sounded good! The Homecoming Queen, Laicie Alexander, was beautiful and her Warrior Varsity football sponsor, Adam Cobb, was more than worthy of the honor as he is just a well-rounded student! The fireworks were also one of the many highlights of the night (these came after the announcement of the Homecoming Queen)! To top it off, the Warriors were able to celebrate with a well-deserved Homecoming win! Kudos to all the students, staff and faculty that made this wonderful evening possible! I am already looking forward to next year’s Homecoming! Go Warriors!

Willie, How come we never ever hear about the Seneca High JV Team? The JV team gave Seneca their first win of the season against Blue Ridge. Do these players not matter to the paper? I don’t know about you, but these players are the future of Bobcat football but yet they seem to be forgotten about.

Willie, Just a correction to the tirade by the admitted liberal Democrat who did a good job of bashing both Democrats and Republicans over lying in politics. Bravo! But then he blew it by calling Bush a liar over weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Saddam did pose WMDs. Sadam used them (poison gas) on his own people. How convenient to forget. Actually the U.S. has found about 500 chemical weapons in Iraq since 2003, and we are likely to find more. Also, Fox News interviewed one of Saddam’s generals who admitted seeing some of Saddam’s WMDs shipped to Syria for safekeeping. Of course being a liberal, I doubt the writer watches Fox News for fair and balanced reporting, and the other liberal networks are not going to tell the truth if it will make Bush look good.

Willie, Comment on the drinking laws ... In 1968 I was sitting in the canals of Vietnam fighting for the right of Americans to be free, but if I was home in South Carolina I would not be able to drink alcohol. Please quit insulting us with your morals and then turn around and ask us to die for your freedom.

I am wondering why so many “natives” seem to have trouble with “Yankees.” I moved here from Utah a few years ago and do not consider myself a Yankee. I was born and raised in Texas, which I believe is further south than this glorious state. As for “native,” are these complainers true pureblood Native Americans? My great grandmother was full-blooded Navajo. I think that is pretty “native” in the U.S. Please use your words wisely and without prejudice. We are a melting pot. If you’re angry with “Yankee” complaints and their being here, step in their shoes. Not all of them came by choice. I myself moved here to take care of my father after my mother died. It was either that or put him in a home. If you went up north and thought them odd, would you want the same reaction? It’s easy to cross your arms and stamp your feet. Look outside the box. The world is a huge place. People are often displaced due to circumstance. Their dissatisfaction isn’t personal. Maybe it’s culture shock. To throw stones just enforces the very stereotype many accuse them of and does not help the situation, but makes it worse. Having been in the area for five years, I’d rather see us viewed in a positive Southern hospitality demeanor. If you agree with “Yankee, go home,” then you’re only hurting yourself.

Willie, Concerning the message in “Tell Willie” about the Farmer’s Market, evidently they were the people I bought them cardboard tomatoes from. If these sorry, so-called farmers would get out and grow their stuff, then people wouldn’t be calling griping about the Farmer’s Market. They’re too lazy to grow them, and they’re hauling them up and down the road. Yes, I’m going to complain about it for as long as I can.

Willie, I love reading “Tell Willie” and the rest of the paper. When I’m home from college I usually go pick one up. I used to go to the West Union Post Office to get one, but they have taken the newspaper holders out. Do you know why? I now go to the stand beside Ingles, but I always feel like I’m in the way and sometimes it is hard to get over to that section.
