Recession will end with jobs
Published Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
Any pretense that this recession will be over soon should have been washed away with Friday’s unemployment report. One in every 10 Americans capable of working is without a job this month. It’s the worst national unemployment rate in 26 years.

Barbs and bouquets
Published Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009
The Journal uses this space today to issue words of praise or criticism to local and state groups or people in the news. Bouquets go to those we feel have done something right, and barbs to those who, in our view, have erred.

More to be said about bears
Published Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
Editor: In response to Jessica Sibley's Saturday article about bear hunting. I always appreciate the quality of Ms. Sibley's writing and the oftentimes unique angle of her approach to a subject.

Money has been designated
Published Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
Editor: I have noted your campaign to have taxes reduced and monies returned to the taxpayers. Normally I would agree with you, but these monies have been put aside for specific projects and needs. I have to agree with Chuck Kormelink of Fair Play for the most part, except he forgot the new library that I am in favor of.

County tree hackers are back
Published Friday, Nov. 6, 2009
Editor: Update: The county crew is back. They've insisted they remove the azalea "hedge" which I started 35 years ago as an erosion control effort in a muddy ditch. I'm meeting again Monday to make one last plea. But the following is an opportunity for citizens to retake some logic to the situation.

Tell Willie, 11-7
Published Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
Willie, When does good old Oconee get in the business of underwriting bonds for the developers of Highpointe or any such interest? We have a ton of development that did not ask the taxpayers to underwrite it. The $6 million is backed by the taxpayers of Oconee; taxpayers read this. Did anyone notice that real estate is not selling? It’s great the land is supposedly worth more, but if there are no buyers, it is worth zip. Just ask the banks who are not lending. If this goes through, then I want roads and sewer on my land so that I can sell or not and let Oconee take the risk.

Willie,
Can you tell us the compensation of Ms. Brown at the county? What are her credentials? Has she previously worked in similar conditions with the accounting firm she chose for the county? Isn’t she appointed? She sure walks and talks like a politician.

Tell Willie, 11-05

Willie, I am a citizen of Westminster and I am concerned over my safety and the safety of others living on Greenfield Road. There is a posted speed limit sign of 25 mph on Greenfield Road. Many drivers are driving at speeds of over 45 mph on a street with many curves, small children and homes that are very close to the road shoulder. I live on this street and rarely see any law enforcement. This week, I watched two dogs get slammed into by speeding drivers. This happened less than 20 feet from my doorstep. The truck was flying down the road. I also observed two large trucks racing on both lanes of the road at excessive speeds. Several reports have been made to law enforcement regarding the speed limit. Is it going to take a tragic car accident or a pedestrian getting killed to get some police monitoring? What is the legal speed limit for Greenfield Road?

Brett McLaughlin: When newspapers become the news
Published Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
When newspapering becomes news, everything takes on a little edge. The newsroom gets edgy. The reporters are edgy. The sources are definitely edgy, and even some of the readers start showing signs of edginess. This past week, the cycle was completed as “the newspaper” found itself thrust into the debate over county finances. The Journal became either a reason to take action, or the villainous instigator of a non-issue and propagator of half-truths, depending on which side you were on. It’s interesting how this happens.

Michael Gerson: Funding health care on the backs of the young
Published Friday, Nov. 6, 2009
As I was talking recently with the founder of a large American corporation, the conversation turned (inevitably) to health care reform. His employees in their 20s, on average, cost the company about $1,500 a year in health bills. Those in their 50s cost at least 10 times more. The effect of proposed health care reform — which limits the ability of insurers to charge higher premiums for older adults — would be, he said, a large shift of America's health care burden to the younger generation.
