Have a blue Christmas

For me, the week between Christmas and New Year’s has always been a great time to hit the road. Nothing is going on at work and the holiday celebrations of Christmas are over. Read More |

Now's the time for wintertime Keowee crappie
Published Friday, Dec. 19, 2008
The Federal Government performed one of those opinion polls a few years ago on a random selection of fishing license buyers across the country. One of the questions revolved around how many hours and what type of fishing did the angler participate in.

Corps partnerships under way to extend Hartwell boat ramps
Published Friday, Dec. 12, 2008
I had the chance to try out one of the makeshift ramp extensions provided by the USACE on Lake Hartwell over the weekend. The Corps has added crushed rock and gravel to five of its longer ramps in an attempt to keep access to the lake open. Fortunately, the launch and takeout at Greenpond Landing in Anderson County were uneventful. Unfortunately, so was the fishing. My fishing partner and I had no problem launching my 22-foot War Eagle, but I’ll admit having a 4-wheel drive truck was a definite benefit when it came time to take out. It was hard to recognize the lake, I’m used to looking up 10 feet at the shoreline, not 20, to find my way around the lake.

Time to hit the hot hole
Published Friday, Dec. 5, 2008
As much as I have written in this column about deer hunting, you’d think I was a die-hard fan. I’m going to be honest and tell you I love to hunt, but I was born to fish. Read More |

Corps of Engineers looking for partners to extend Hartwell ramps
Published Friday, Nov. 28, 2008
In a time when both water levels and government budgets are at an all-time low, the Army Corps of Engineers-Lake Hartwell Project is looking to partner with local groups to extend and upgrade boat ramps around Lake Hartwell. Due to a severe drought that is about to enter its third year, Lake Hartwell water levels exceeded the lowest recorded level back in October when the pool dipped below 642 feet at mean sea level. The reservoir’s normal pool is 660 ft, leaving the lake over 20 feet low at the present time. The lower water levels have left all of the boating access ramps maintained by the Corps high and dry. The Corps is currently maintaining extensions to five of its public ramps to allow public access to the lake.

Like a duck out of water?

I need to brush up on my outdoor clichés, because I think the saying refers to a fish out of water. In any event, next Wednesday marks the opening day of the 2008-2009 South Carolina waterfowl season. Read More |

Try different strategies in the deer woods
Published Friday, Nov. 7, 2008
I’ll have to confess that people rarely get upset with me for driving too slow or not paying attention while driving. I’m not one who ordinarily spends time multi-tasking behind the wheel, not even using a cell phone as much as some of those I see on the roads. Read More |

Making sense of deer season
Published Friday, Oct. 17, 2008
This past weekend I was sitting in my deer stand, watching the leaves drop and the few scatterings of acorns periodically fall, when I heard the unmistakable sound of a deer “blowing.” I hate that sound. It’s worse than one of those game show buzzers that tell you your answer was wrong. Actually, the situations are similar because chances are, you have done something wrong. Read More |

What’s happening to Lake Hartwell?
Published Friday, Oct. 10, 2008
The lowest level ever recorded on Lake Hartwell was in 1981 at 642.4 feet above sea level. Subtracting from Hartwell’s normal elevation of 660 msl, that was a little over 17½ feet low. According to projections on the Corps of Engineers’ website, that record will be broken sometime next week. The drop in water levels on the entire Savannah Chain has left local and area residents with a lot of questions.
