Hunting for the next generation
Published Friday, Oct. 3, 2008
Most folks have heard of the “Take a Kid Fishing” program. It’s a great program and has been embraced across the country. There are several initiatives to get kids into hunting, but they just don’t seem to get the publicity--probably because hunting involves weapons and killing. I’ll spare you the political agenda, but have to state that hunting does involve weapons--rifles, shotguns and bows, and killing. Read More |

Four days till October
Published Friday, Sept. 26, 2008
Even as a kid, I never was one who would count down the number of days till Christmas or summer break or any other event. But I will admit that I do keep an eye on the calendar for the approach of October. For those outdoors enthusiasts in the Upstate, October comes in with a bang and goes out with the rut. It’s a win-win situation. Even if you aren’t a hunter, October means cooler nights and largemouth, crappie, stripers, and trout moving up and in to start gorging on baitfish. Read More |

Deer season opens Monday
Published Friday, Sept. 12, 2008
A couple of weeks ago, we talked about some close-to-home deer hunting land that was available on public land around lakes Keowee and Jocassee. Likewise, some of the “un-developable” land that was kept in public hands around Lake Hartwell has also been added to the Game Management Land program and is available for tri-county hunters who don’t have private land or leases to hunt. Welcome to hunting season 2008
Published Friday, Aug. 29, 2008
Monday marks what I consider to be the opening day of hunting season. Of course, I realize that deer season opened in the lower part of the state two weeks ago and I also know that several die-hard hunters chase hogs and coyotes all year long but for me, Monday is the day. Read More |

Need a place to hunt…Mountain Lakes Region has public lands available
Published Friday, Aug. 22, 2008
With deer season less than a month away for a large portion of the Upstate, many hunters are scrambling to find new and alternative places to hunt. Hunters in the area surrounding the Mountain Lakes Region are fortunate to have some of the most pristine and under-hunted public lands in the state. One reason for the reduced hunting pressure is the degree of difficulty in accessing public lands. The majority of Wildlife Management Areas in South Carolina do not permit motorized vehicle access, which rules out using motor vehicles, ATVs or golf carts to travel to hunt sites. While many paved and vehicle-accessible roads lead to these lands, motorized traffic is restricted to only certain areas.

Clemson student relives memorable deer hunt from last August
Published Friday, Aug. 15, 2008
Looking back at his 2007 deer season, Drew Evans was just trying to help out his soon-to-be sister-in law. A graduating senior at Clemson University, the 21-year-old from Cameron was sitting in a deer stand on a new piece of family property on the second day of the 2007 season. Evans wasn’t really hunting hard that day. In truth he was more or less passing time by sitting in the deer stand filming deer as they came into the millet field to feed late in the day. Evans had not hunted the property much and was filming deer “just to see what was on the property.”

Weeknight bassers say Keowee fishery is getting better
Published Friday, Aug. 8, 2008
For the last dozen or so years, bass fishermen have been lining up in the waters just off of Gap Hill Landing waiting for the horn to sound the blast-off of another night of “four hours of madness.” Commonly referred to as “Tuesday or Thursday nighters,” these weeknight bass tournaments held on Lake Keowee are part summer tradition, part fun and fellowship, and part hardcore competition.

Start getting those food plots ready

No, I’m not an idiot. If you are a deer hunter who takes an active role in the management of your own or leased land for deer hunting, I can understand why you might want to call me an idiot when I suggest it’s time to plant food plots. Read More |
