Hartis M. Mullis November 1, 2009 CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mr. Mullis, 87, was welcomed into the presence of the Lord during the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 1.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, by the Rev. Bob Owens and Dr. John Hill at Craig Ave A.R.P. Church with visitation with the family before the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that memorials be made to Craig Ave. Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church, 3936 Craig Ave., Charlotte, NC 28211.
Mr. Mullis was born in Mint Hill, N.C. on Christmas Day, 1921 to John Ellis and Bertha Mae Hartis Mullis. He lived in the Charlotte area most of his life. He served in the Army Air Force from July 1943 until March 1946 flying with the 367th Bombardment Squadron as an aerial gunner over northern France, central Europe and the Rhineland area of Germany. He received an American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Air Medal WWII Victory Medal and was the last surviving member of his squadron. After WWII, he graduated from the American University in Washington, D.C. He was a regional claims manager with the insurance division of GMAC for more than 30 years of employment. He was a devoted and active member of Craig Ave. Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church having served as a deacon and elder.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Bright Callaham Mullis; daughters, Maria M. Sink (Dennis) of Lexington, N.C. and Melanie M. Charles (Lee) and granddaughter, Katie A. Charles of High Point, N.C. He is also survived by his nieces, Barbara Bagwell (Kerry) and Judy Shepherd and Joyce Mullis of Charlotte; nephew, John Cheek (Dora) of Charlotte; niece, Sharon Chastain (Brad) of Westminster, S.C. and nephews, Doug Littlefield of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Bob Chatfield (Denise) and John Chatfield (Lynn) of Thomaston, Ga.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Holbert and Henry Mullis and his sister, Maureen Mullis Cheek.
