Capt. Charles W. Roe October 22, 2009 SENECA, S.C. — Capt. Charles William Roe, USN (Ret.), husband of Joan Lucille Wagner Roe, died Thursday, Oct. 22 at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.
Burial with full military honors will take place on Jan. 25, 2010 in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC. Memorials may be made to Oconee Hospice of The Foothills, Attn: Foundation Office, 298 Memorial Drive, Seneca, SC 29672.
Born on June 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles and Helen Marie Decker Roe. He earned a B.S. from University of Michigan; a B.A. from University of Maryland; M.A. from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy Tufts University; A. A. from San Diego State University; and was a graduate of the Foreign Service Institute, Washington, D.C.
Capt. Roe enlisted in the US Navy in 1953. His tours of duty included USS Coral Sea; Commanding Officer VAH10; CINCPAC Fleet, Pearl Harbor; Executive Officer USS Midway; Commanding Officer Naval Activities, Naval Base, Rota, Spain; Pentagon; Professor of Naval Science, University of Virginia. Capt. Roe received the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Service Medal (7th), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Occupation Medal and Meritorious Commendation Medal.
In addition to his wife, Capt. Roe is survived by three daughters, Nancy R. Roadifer, Tracy L. Charbonneau and Dawn L. Roe; son, Charles William Roe, Jr.; brother, Robert Roe and six grandchildren.
