A motorist fuels up at a gas station in Half Moon Bay, Calif., Tuesday, May 27, 2008. Oil prices dropped below $129 a barrel Tuesday, falling sharply on a growing sense that soaring gas and oil prices have cut demand for fuel during the normally busy summer driving season. At the pump, meanwhile, retail gasoline prices rose, but only slightly, leading to renewed speculation that gas may follow the normal seasonal pattern of peaking around Memorial Day and then declining over the summer. For April, demand for durable goods — items expected to last at least three years — fell by 0.6 percent, slightly larger than the 0.5 percent drop reported last week in a preliminary report. The weakness was led by a 24.4 percent drop in demand for commercial aircraft, a sector that is extremely volatile from month to month, and a 4.2 percent decline in motor vehicles, an industry that is being battered by soaring gasoline prices and the weak economy.

When Jason Kenna heard there had been another deadly crane collapse in New York on Friday, he knew that Heede Southeast would be spending the day double-checking its cranes, including this one, which his company has had on the Oconee Medical Center (OMC) construction site for the past year. Heede is a Pineville, N.C., tower crane rental company. Kenna has spent years performing safety checks in hopes of preventing such collapses. Friday's collapse in New York, which killed two workers, is the second in months for the city, which saw seven people die in a collapse in March. Another collapse in Miami killed two workers last month. In an interview with the Charlottte Observer this week, Kenna said when events like this happen, “We just know we need to be extra, extra cautious and double- and triple-check everything.” The Heede crane at OMC will complete its work and be disassembled some time this month.
