On Examining the positives and negatives of Tommy Bowden's Clemson career

Tgrfan22 nailed it. Clemson's OC, Rob Spence doesn't understand that you need to stretch the field in order enable the running game. Intermediate and long pass attempts can be successful even if they're not completed because they stretch the field and keep the defenses honest. Maryland adjusted in the second half by loading the box and pulling in D-backs to stop the run. Clemson should have adjusted by passing all over Maryland's 112th ranked pass defense, until Maryland had to back off. And then Clemson should have hit them with the running game again. But Clemson only threw ONE ball past the first down marker in the second half. Run & screen. Run & screen. Maryland sold out for the run and made a fool of Clemson's incompetent OC.

It was depressing to watch UVA put 31 points on Maryland because UVA launched a BALANCED attack of runs, screens, short passes, intermediate passes, and long passes. UVA's (far less talented) passing game enabled UVA's (far less talented) running game to succeed. Spence is so incompetent. It's just too easy load up and beat Rob Spence's predictable run & screen offense.

Here are some more negative stats on Bowden:

AS OF LAST SEASON, BOWDEN VERSUS AP TOP 25 FINISHERS:
Overall vs Top 25: 7-26 (.212)
1st 2 years vs Top 25: 1-7 (.143)
Last 2 years vs Top 25: 1-5 (.167)

Versus AP Top 10 finishers: 0-8 (.000)

Bowl record: 3-5 (.600)
Vs. ACC teams: 42-30 (.583)
Vs (non-ACC) BCS: 12-10 (.545)
Vs SoCar: 7-2 (.778)
Vs non-ACC BCS (not SoCar): 5-8 (.385)

On What really went wrong for Clemson

You are right. After UMD loaded the box in the 2nd half (in order to stop the run) Clemson threw just ONE ball PAST the 1st down marker. (A 20 yard sideling pass to Grishams- which drew a defensie pass interference call.) I'm not talking about throwing deep. I'm talking about just throwing PAST the @#$% 1st down marker once in a while in order to have a balanced offense that keeps the defense honest. Deep balls MAY not have been possible because of line-play, but short and intermediate routes were there all day. Kelly, Grisham, Ford, & Spiller all accel at making catches on those routes-- often adding even more yards after the catch. But Clemson's OC, Rob Spence, is incompetent. He refuses to adjust. He refuses to stretch the field. He calls lots of passes, but mostly screens or a swing pass for 0-2 yards where the receiver is expected to run past the marker. Run & screen. HRun & screen. High completion rates without getting past the 1st down marker. So predictable. Same thing year after year. Great overall stats (including cupcakes) but too few points against the better teams-- or just any team that can stop the run. Spence couldn't figure out how to use his dangerous future-NFL receivers , TE's and Spiller in a passing game against the 109th ranked pass defense? Completely incompetent. It's just unthinkable that Bowden would let Spence continue to call the plays.

On Should Tigers really 'Fear the Turtle?'

Clemson's O-line is so decimated, it's just hard to imagine the skill players being able to do their jobs. I think Clemson can win this game. But Wake will be a different beast.

On Harper remains Tigers' best option

After starting the year playing his senior QB (Todd Boeckman) Jim Tressel (owner of a national championship and multiple Big Ten titles) is now starting his more talented dual-threat TRUE-freshman, Terrelle Pryor, at a point when Ohio State is about to start their Big Ten schedule.

After starting the season playing his senior QB (Sean Glennon) Frank Beamer (owner of multiple league titles) is now starting his 2nd-year dual-threat QB (Tyrod Taylor).

Apparently Tressel and Beamer disagree with the author's assertion that experience trumps talent. I trust their judgment more than I trust the author's or Bowden's.

The backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team? That's ridiculous. Are Missouri, Kansas, BYU, USC, Florida, Oklahoma, fans calling for their Heisman candidate QBs to be replaced by the backup? If Harper were playing as well as he did before he hurt his shoulder in the BC game last year, very few fans would be calling for Korn. But from what the fans have seen this year, Korn is playing better than Harper, just like Pryor is playing better than Boeckman.
