On Don’t accept the way things are

Seems like the county needs to do one of two things, or both: Cut the tax millage (fat chance of that) or reappraise the lake-front properties to bring them more in line with reality.

On Seneca football players charged with locker room assault

I agree that the underage victim's name should not have been made public, and most responsible media wouldn't have done that. Freedom of the press comes with a huge amount of responsiblity and in this case the newspaper abused that priviledge by running the name of the 15-year-old victim. Naming the victim in this case was irrelevant to the news, which was that an unnamed juvenile (in this case a prominent football player) was apparently assaulted at school and that students were suspended. Nevertheless, the school district should have released that information to the public instead of withholding it and thereby feeding the rumor beast.

On Seneca football players charged with locker room assault

Motherofthree: We're talking about a PUBLIC high school, funded with PUBLIC dollars. That means a good chunk of the taxes you're assessed every year help pay the salaries of those who work in the Oconee County School District, with the understanding and expectation that those people will teach your children in a safe environment. Since we're paying for it, the public needs to know what it's getting for its' money. It appears that in this case the school administration chose not to go public about the incident until a parent complained to the police, at which point the high school had no choice. Had the school and the district gone public with this early on, they probably could have avoided the CYA mode they currently appear to be in.

On Returning taxes not a good idea

You're blame misses the target when it comes to the courthouse. The county engineer answers to County Council. So, the question should be: Where was County Council when the new courthouse was being built?

On We must stop rush to socialism, globalism

JustBecause: Not sure what you mean by "journalistic integrity." Even that cathedral of liberalism, the New York Times, has been caught making up stuff (they've been forced to fire a couple of "journalists" in the process). So, I guess you'd have to include them in your FoxNews/Enquirer category.

On Oconee County has money, but won't give it back

County Council seems to be taking lessons from the federal government, which has created this monster "stimulus" plan -- billions and billions of tax dollars -- but likely won't spend all of it. If you think the feds are going to give that unused money back to the taxpayers, I have some oceanfront property in Kansas I'll gladly sell you.

On We must stop rush to socialism, globalism

Looks like the Obama administration is compiling its own "enemies list," -- Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, talk radio and anyone else who they think is undermining their agenda. Nixon had one and that didn't work out too well for him. History has shown that whenever a president takes on the media the outcome isn't good for the White House.

On We must stop rush to socialism, globalism

Good comments, Mr. Olsen.

Obviously, the current U.S. administration is more interested in stabilizing the world community, even if it means appeasing oppressive governments at the expense of freedom. After all, as this country found out some 230 years ago, the pursuit of freedom can get messy, and the current administration clearly doesn't like conflict.

On National parks: a great idea

Hey billbuehl, here's a question: I keep hearing the politicians tell me that they want to spend trillions of dollars to make my life better and do it without raising my income taxes. I strongly suspect that they're liars. Is that what you mean by looking "beneath the obvious surfaces of things"?

On National parks: a great idea

Ralph needs to chill. The series was simply a story about the history of the National Park system, with some stunning photograpy. I watched most of it but I must have missed the part where the park system was characterized as some sort of "socialist" movement.

The "Evil Empire" known as private enterprise plays a key role in the success of the National Parks. For example, the government often contracts with private companies to operate the parks' lodges and restaurants, a partnership that seems to be working.

In fact, governments that can keep that balance between public and private enterprise seem to be the ones that work the best.
