On Administrator search 'disappointing' to some

I am referring to any newspaper mogul who thinks of Oconee County as a private fiefdom. Afraid of bad press, fearful of the raking previous Councils have received, has led Mr. McCall to not think for himself but abandon his freewill to the largest megaphone, the press. For example, no information of applicants was to be released to the press; that was clearly stated in very public meetings that that would not happen until they had finalists and were going to move on to background checks. Yet an applicant is mentioned in the article and we only have Mr. McCall's word that the person was even a finalist. The other 2 vocal people complaining about the process were both selected by Mr. McCall to sit on the committee. Mr. Nowell's spouse works for Eagle Media; he therefore has an interest in not rocking any boats nor sticking his neck out. marcy63, to me it's not how many votes any of them got. It's serving all the people openly and honestly and without pushing personal agendas.

You make some good comments regarding a golden parachute. But Wayne McCall is not looking out for us, nor did he write this op ed. When Mc Call was running for office his card said, "You are some body." The person who allowed that did not write this article. Wayne Mcall has one master and one constituent and that person does not reside in Oconee County.

On Oconee sitting on more than $40 million

Mr. Nowell and Mr.Moore are not a watchdog group, so that is misleading. The Dept. of Revenue audited and found Mr. Nowell's claim false. For some reason he and the Daily Journal won't be satisfied until some audit, any audit, proves want he and the Daily Journal want to be the truth. Third, I would have more confidence in Mr. Nowell's assertions if his spouse was not employed by Eagle Media thus making him susceptible to arm twisting. Lastly, most counties have 4 months in reserve, not 2 or the 3 that we have. And the article conveniently omitted that reserves are necessary for a good bond rating and credit rating. Move on.

On Hush money?

Thank you for writing George. Please, yet again, let me clarify what you already know. The administrator could not be terminated for any reason without payment of one year's salary. It was the administrator, not county council, that reneged on the open hearing. I agree that the administrator did not want his dirty laundry aired publicly. Be an old soldier and fade away.

Thank you Village Scribe for your astute and accurate observations.

On Councilman George Blanchard resigns

The current council has broken no laws and is undeserving of Mr. Blanchard's accusations with no proof given. Like Mr. Blanchard, all the councilmen have been duly elected and have followed protocol. It wasn't following protocol when Mr. Blanchard announced that Mr. Surrett's contract was being extended while it still had 2 years and three lame ducks were on the council. No, Mr. Blanchard resigned, I think, because he doesn't like being out of power. If Mr. Blanchard was really concerned with his constituents in District I and the county he would not have resigned but stayed and worked within the system. Resigning was theatrical and the easy way out. It's easy to make accusations without substantiating them. What organization or individual is Mr. Blanchard in cahoots with?

On Letter to the Editor: Nelson

Thirteen hundred feet is overkill.  This covers over 90 percent of the property owners from hi rise development which is what they want.  I'm happy with this compromise.  It doesn't seem like anything was lost.  We should be happy and satisfied.

On Emergency Services, Station 21 appear in jeopardy

The future of station 21 was in question since last June. The 3 new incumbents have mae no secret of that so they are following through on what they campaigned for and what I, for one, want. I much more value our volunteer fire departments and believe they would operate much more effectively and efficiently without Mr. Burdette's interference.

On April brings new Planning Commission

If the Planning Commission is so inept, then perhaps the Lake Keowee Overlay that the Planning Commission recently endorsed and past AQD president Steve McLeod pushed so hard for, should be tossed out. Perhaps the entire ZEO, too.
Also, I inferred from the letter that Mr. McLeod is implying that we do away with the Planning Commission based on districts. I oppose that. I would hate to have
"the Lake" people comprise the majority of the board.
