On Project to change face of Bountyland

Architecturally it is characterless. Basically boxes with red awnings. I guess I don't much care as long as Yoshi reopens soon.

On Drought holds on across state

Has anybody considered the possibility that we are not in a "drought" situation, but that less rainfall is the new reality? Isn't it time we took stronger conservation measures?

On Letter to the Editor: Time for a new U.S. car?

Our 4 cylinder Nissan truck is 13 years old and still going strong without needing major repairs. Our 2 year old Honda Hybrid gets 40-50 MPG and has already saved us over $1800 in gasoline. Why should the Big Three be bailed out when the quality of their product is poor by comparison, and management is driven by greed and lack of foresight? Foresight, now there's a word that has been altogether missing in our politics, personal consumption, and corporate "philosophy".

On Letter to the Editor: Biden lied

Ken, You're just perennially disgruntled because the truth is not the truth as you want it to be. Are you completely incapable of looking past your own viewpoint? I have read many mainstream media reports about Biden's "plagiarism". The fact that he forgot to credit Mr. Kinnock in one speech out of dozens cost Biden much. Every time Biden makes a speech and misquotes or tells a lie, deliberately or forgetfully, I read about it in the mainstream media. I agree that Biden's biggest sin is hyperbole. He is an old time storyteller, tending toward exaggeration or shading the truth to make a better story. It does not alter his core character or effectiveness as a Senator.

I have read many pro Republican columns in the mainstream and right wing media. I actually like reading articles written by people I basically disagree with as long as they are factual. It makes me think. The main difference I have found between the mainstream media and the right wing media (FOX news, National Review, Washington Times, etc.) is that if a situation is unfavorable to the right wing and they can get away with it, these media outlets simply ignore it, bury it in small print/back pages, or give minimal coverage. I know this because I will read an article in several national mainstream publications and search for it on FOX or the others I mentioned to little avail. The reverse scenario is not the case. Fair and balanced? Not hardly.

Mr. Kennedy, your assumption that Obama properly vetted Biden and chose him anyway is correct. That compares favorably to McCain who did not properly vet his own running mate and is now paying the price for it. The choice of Sarah Palin has only succeeded in driving away independants and moderates from McCain and fostering the hate filled fringe elements. You have something of a point about Wright, but for comparison's sake should research Palin's long time church and her pastor's witchcraft ceremonies. McCain is basically secular so you won't find much there. Ayers was never an advisor of any kind. The bottom line on Ayers is that if you truly believe that Obama "palled around with a terrorist" while serving on an education board with him, then that same "terrorist" was selected and funded by hard core conservative Walter Annenberg.

Geez guys, you need to broaden your horizons and the stuff you read. Failing that, maybe you should believe only what you can verify. Factcheck.org or Politifact.com are good non partisan places to start.

Just for fun, there is a truly detailed and well written article in Rolling Stone magazine about McCain's history. I found the link through a conservative blog. Here it is:

On Public deserves tough questioning and even tougher responses

odj, get your partisan terminology straight. The far right are wingnuts and the far left side are "moonbats" whatever that means. In any case, I am in the "mushy middle", and vote for either party as I see fit. I do like to vote based on facts though. If you guys spent as much time researching both sides as I have, you'd know when your chain was being yanked.

fredatwork, that's really funny and pure bluster. Have you bothered to research McCain's advisors and associates with the same zeal and jaundiced eye as Obama's? If not, why not?

There was also a good article in the New York Times this morning about the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. The Act had little if anything to do with the current market meltdown.

More trumped up lies from the right wing nut sect. The facts are easily checked from reputable non partisan sites. There's no excuse for this kind of sloppy tale telling. Do your homework and stop spreading lies.

On Wall Street mess should make all of us mad

odj, sorry for the delay, but I just checked back in on this site. Talk about uninformed "know it alls". If you bothered to read all of my post you would have seen that the information on the bills in question came from the Library of Congress, which is neither junk nor self indulgently Democratic, although it is very dull reading. Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't use obviously partisan web sites for my information. I still manage to stay very well informed.

Ken, Thanks for answering one of my questions anyway. While I'm always happy to argue politics, I avoid religion which I believe is personal and should remain that way. I heartily believe in the separation of church and state whether or not it is in the Constitution. To do otherwise would be to see this country devolve into the same type of theocracy that so many people fled to our fledgling country to get away from. I also don't believe in abortion under most circumstances. But neither do I believe that anyone has the right to force a woman to bear a child that she does not want or can not care for. You know as well as I do that the child welfare system is already overloaded and totally dysfunctional. We as a nation are unable or even unwilling to help care for all of the children that have already been born to trying circumstances. Why aren't we trying to fix that problem first?

And Ken there you go again making statements about deregulation that facts do not support. Maybe you should spend more time with Google. Remember the $600 billion Savings and Loan bailout? That was after two S&L deregulation bills were passed under Ronnie Reagan and a Republican Senate and Democratic House. It was also a Republican House and Senate that eviserated the Glass Steagall Bill of 1932, removing remaing regulation under Bill Clinton. Don't know about the Jimmy Carter bills. Haven't looked them up yet.

And on your comment about the Republicans trying to regulate Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae...Please. If you want to read the facts, they are posted in my reply to Eddo in the Editorial section under "Wall Street Mess Should Make Us All Mad." My data came from the Library of Congress and told quite a different story.

Ken, Just curious. What is that philosophy so liberal and vile? I agree that racists are in both parties, but to what extent in each? Many believe that Goldwater's social and secular views would be considered liberal today and you would vote for him? Why? I see you bring a different perspective having grown up in New England. Sorry that you missed the chaos down South. Why would you say that most New England states are blue while the South en masse is red? Is it because New England is more diverse, better educated, or in your opinion, just sadly misled?
