On Oconee unveils county boss finalists

This seems to be a rather abrupt turn around for Mr. McCall considering his blistering letter from just a few days ago. I assume some one in authority is in possession of the negatives, if you catch my drift.

On Tell Willie: 11/11/08

Egg on face. Sorry Journal, missed the 1A photo and story on vets. Must have been half asleep. Good job. My bad.

On Tell Willie: 11/11/08

Today, November 11, is Veteran's Day. Unless I missed it, there's nary a reference to the day in today's Journal. It's difficult to fathom, that with our troops in danger zones on 2 or 3 fronts and thousands killed or horribly wounded over the past few years, that just a small news hole couldn't have been reserved to acknowledge the military personnel present and past.

On Editorial: We need to heed the call to be one nation

You must read the news through tinted glasses. As I've stated before, SC ranks near the bottom in lots of the most desirable traits like educational level and public schools and health care for its citizens and near the top in undesirable areas like violent crime (numero uno), drunken driving, unwed mothers, etc. Follow it up if you feel inclined, there are many other examples. The Daily Journal carries news items confirming these observations almost daily.

On Editorial: We need to heed the call to be one nation

"Tuesday, the majority of South Carolinians stayed put politically and for that they can be proud."

Oh boy, we're still a solid #47, and by God we'll keep doing everything the same way until we fall to #50. Go team Republican!!!

On Editorial: Election

Seems like SC never learns. We keep returning the same tired, failed politicians and concepts to office year after year. We have a state that's near the top in all the undesirable categories (violent crime, unemployment, etc.), and near the bottom in the desirable qualities (education, wages, protection of the environment). It's difficult to believe that by pressing on with the same or similar candidates and policies will produce any better/different results.

On Kudzu Corner: Phillip Nolan and the jazz singer

Mr. Gambrell is up to his old tricks of playing fast and loose with the facts. The story of Philip (one "L" only) Nolan is from a piece of fiction "The Man without a Country," by Edward Everett Hale in the Atlantic Monthly in 1863. The events of the man (Nolan) depicted in Hale's story were purely from Hale's imagination, and made a stirring cautionary tale of devotion to country during the Civil War.

There was a real Philip Nolan, but he wasn't the man described in the story and his life bore no resemblance to the Hale story. Hale had heard the name and borrowed it for his story. The real Philip Nolan actually was a marginal horse trader/horse thief who was either shot or executed along the Mexican border in 1801 by either Spanish or U.S. authorities while on a horse "gathering" trip.

On Feeling the heat

The efforts of local and state level government agencies to come to grips in any meaningful way with the current drought and the short and long-term water shortages is more than mildly alarming. Clemson says they'll limit lawn watering to 7pm-7am, Seneca's asking people to limit the amount of water used for brusing teeth, Walhalla essentially going for the same volunteer approach. That's pretty feeble considerng this area's been in an extreme drought for two years or more. Another columnist suggested, in times like these a brown lawn should be a badge of honor. And the state legislature. Apparently, they're content to wait a couple of more years to move forward with all glacial speed on pending legislation. Guess they're hoping Mother Nature will bail them out before they have to make painful decisions that might upset the lobbyists.

On Rollin commentary: Sticks and stones

Thank you Mr. Rollin for a welcome antidote to the poisonous Mr. Gambrell. Carroll Gambrell gets an inordinate amount of news space on a recurring basis to vent his only thinly veiled religious, racial and class prejudices, with little counterpoint given room. I salute you Mr. Rollin for your courage, precision and elegance in stepping forth and pointing out that be-hatted, smug, bully actually has no clothes.

On Early morning fire destroys two homes at The Reserve at Lake Keowee

"What happens at Keowee Reserve, stays at Keowee Reserve" it seems. Your coverage of the major fire on Tuesday morning seemed pretty sketchy to me. It's especially odd that there were no accompanying photos. I know how fond the press is of fire scene photos. The photo of the entrance sign was worth considerably less than a thousand words. The Reserve story and photo in the Greenville News similarly thin. Is the gated community so tightly controlled that they can limit press access?
