How in the world did this go undetected? A crime this seriuos and committed right under the nose of the Sheriff.
Just a suggestion: A little less golf and a lot more law enforcement. Apparently, when he is on the green, the green at the OLEC is disappearing.
Who ever the Sheriff put in charge of oversight of these accounts apparently went to sleep. Surely they had more than one person conducting checks and balancing.
I agree with a couple of the comments. I have a hard time believing that she took all this money by herself and went undetected for three years. I guess we will wait for the rest of the story.
In Oconee County, it's not what you know it is who. I have met Mr. Derrick but I do not claim to know him as well as it sounds as you do. I disagree with the statement made about Mr. Sprouse. He was a great help to my grandfather in his last years. I appreciate his talents in the court room. It does appear that most of the folks named as judges or magistrates got their positions because of their relationship to someone. I may be wrong but it seems that Mr.Sprouse and Mr. Simmons are the only two lawyers in the group. Maybe I am wrong or maybe the job does not require much of an education. Could be that they are appointed in the same manner that President Obama's czars are appointed, by friendship and kinship.
The statements made by the JackAss at the Sheriff's Department is not helping the situation that has occured within a small community. Why not keep to the basic facts and not put a "Soap Opera" on the front page. Why stir the pot of a situation that is already extremely bad?
Just because your father is friends of the mayor and his brother-in-law does not qualify you to be in that type of position. I agree with the author of the article in Tell Willie, the conduct of these appointed person(s) needs to be looked at closer.
I think the point the writer was trying to make was, there seems to be several deputys at these locations and not in the high crime areas. I also picked up on the sarcasim.
Pete is probably a good fellow but there are many,many of us counting on a young man who kicked butt in this county for a couple of decades in running for Sheriff. He is NOT one of the "good ole boys" nor any of the "kin folk" that resides at the Oconee County Hilton now. This next election should get interesting. BTW, congradulations to Pete. Good luck to you.
somethingstinks, I agree with you, it would not be right to paint all of them with the same brush. There is a lot of good deputys and police officers in our county. The person that wrote in on this tell willie section was apparently frustrated with the sheriff's department. For a great while that department has been a place where realitives gets a job, campaign managers gets a job and also county council members realitives gets a job. It it such a shame that no one ran for Sheriff in this past election. We can do better than what we have.
monkeyshine, I understand your frustration, but, I will refrain from calling names. I will say that I have lost all respect for James Singleton and how he has allowed that department to become. I have zero confidence in him and his administration. They have lost numerous officers that had lots of experience that just moved on to other departments. They only time you see these people out anymore is when they are conducting some golf tournament or fund raiser to get money to get the sheriff re-elected. I can assure the sheriff and anyone at that office that they will never receive anymore campaign contributions or votes from me.
